Meet Scot McMillan of Scot Rods Garage in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scot McMillan.

Scot, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all began many many years ago. I was born into the Hot Rod scene surrounded by people that loved cars. My Dad ( Big Scot), my mom a drag racer, and one who put up with my dad for a bit, my Uncle (Uncle Jim), and many of their friends. What I remember most is a 69 Camaro that all of these people built together and I was there. I would have been 3 and 4 years old but I distinctly remember that they always gave me apart on the drag race team. The car said McMillan brothers racing on the door and my Dad drove it. My job was to spray the radiator with water to cool the engine faster between rounds. I will never forget all of those memories and the great times we had.

From there I helped my dad build Hot Rods in his 2 car garage (hints Scot Rods Garage). We always had something we were building almost always for someone else, but none the less we were doing it. It became a dream of mine that maybe someday I would have the talent and the luck to do it for a living. I started collecting tools at the age of 14 and was able to build my first whole car at 15. When I hit 18 I was able to finish and get paid for my first customer paying job and did it out of my dad’s garage. The rest is history. I did it as a very little boy I was even there with my dad as a baby in the garage. So I guess I really never had a choice. I am as lucky as any Fireman or Pro Football player because to be in this job and get to do your dream is more luck than skill.

Has it been a smooth road?
Really I have worked my whole life ever since I could remember to get here and there were struggles but nothing that Ramen noodles and more hours in the shop couldn’t fix.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Scot Rods Garage story. Tell us more about the business.
We are Scot Rods Garage. We build anything custom to include Cars, Trucks, Air Boats, and of all things right now a pirate ship. We are more know for Cars and Trucks and our attention to detail. We are most proud of the fact that we are a great team and the fact that we do not follow or copy other companies, we make our own path. One thing sets us apart from the rest and that is Correct Is The Only Option here at Scot Rods Garage. This doesn’t mean there is only one way to do things it simply means when something gets hard we strap in and still finish it right.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The aftermarket industry for vehicles is crazy right now. A lot of the people that want the unmolested original cars are getting old and the kids that are coming up are wanting old cars that drive like new. If you go to the auctions you can see the resto-mods are starting to go for more than what they cost to build. This means all the good shops cannot keep up with the demand. Therefore I am guessing that this is going to be a great decade for the custom shops.
