Meet Brittany Pirtle of Brittany Pirtle Hair in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Pirtle.

Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from Paul Mitchell the School, I took an apprenticeship with one of L’Oreal Professionals National Balayage Artists, Chad Gunn, that is where I really honed in on my craft. Years of hands on training with Chad as well as continuing education classes with L’Oreal, Vivienne Mackinder, Kevin Murphy and others I was able to develop a strong foundation in cutting, coloring, and hair styling. Social media has played a key part in building my business, almost 100% of my clients have come from Instagram or by word of mouth. People don’t realize that Instagram is a full-time job in itself, but the hard work has really paid off by connecting me with new clients as well as afforded me opportunities such as being a social media influencer for the Toni and Guy Creative Release. My next goal is to expand my following to YouTube. I have recently started partnering with different beauty brands, reviewing and testing out their new and interesting products. So far, I have worked with Fanola, Kudus Professional, Design.Me Hair, BLNDN and more. On my channel, you can also find tutorials for consumers as well as hairstylists, and a few short funny videos. With trends and fashion constantly changing we as hairstylists need to continue growing and learning to change with it. I always strive to be more than just a basic hairstylist for every client that sits in my chair.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no. Once you get out of Cosmetology school you don’t know, what you don’t know… so of course you think you know everything. School teaches you the basics, but they can’t prepare you enough for what it’s really like when you’re on your own. During my apprenticeship, I had a lot of “Ah ha” and “Oops” moments and that was frustrating at times, but also humbling. Assisting and working someone else’s schedule isn’t always fun, but I think it’s one of the best things you can do as a new stylist. You get a real taste of what it’s like to work in a salon environment and you are able to ease into everything and learn from someone who’s been there. I think I learned more about hair the first month in my apprenticeship then I did the whole year I was in school. Success is never given to anyone, it is something that has to be earned and that can be easy at times, and hard in others.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brittany Pirtle Hair – what should we know?
My business is Brittany Pirtle Hair. I am a hairstylist, and I specialize in cutting, coloring, and hairstyling. I would say I am most known for Balayage highlights. Balayage is a French highlighting technique that has been around for years, but has gained popularity in the United States in the last few years. The thing I am most proud of as a company is being able to make people feel as pretty on the outside as they do on the inside every day! I would say that the thing that sets me apart from other hairstylist is the fact that I always make sure to customize every cut, color, or style for every client that sits in my chair.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Obviously, I have to give some credit to Chad Gunn, my mentor for letting me work next to him, learn from him, and ask him a million questions for years. But, my biggest supporter and teammate is my husband, Bradley. Without him, I wouldn’t even be doing hair. He is the one that encouraged me to go to school and get my license, and continues to push me every day. He has spent hours learning about the hair industry so he can better help me become successful and accomplish my dreams. He also does a lot of the behind the scenes work for my social media and marketing, this business is as much his as it is mine. Sometimes, I think he works harder than I do. lol.
