Melisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Makeup was something I enjoyed ever since I was in college but I never thought of business out of it until 5 years ago. One of my friends from high school was getting married but she didn’t have anyone to do her makeup. She was contemplating on not doing any makeup at all until we met up for lunch one day and I told her I could do it for her and she agreed. I set up a practice session with her. I only did my friends makeup once in a while for a girl’s night out but not ever for a big occasion such as this so I wanted to get it right but unfortunately due to her military obligations she missed our session. Her wedding was the following weekend, she told me not to worry” I trust you.” So on the day of the wedding, I arrived to her hotel room with a small bag of makeup and did my absolute best and she loved it.
And as I was doing her makeup something clicked in my soul. I had never had such a feeling of fulfillment doing anything in my life. I was born to do this, helping women feel their absolute best is part of my purpose. That day as I left her hotel and drove to her ceremony, I decided that I had to go after this. It gave me so much joy. Within the next couple months, I started taking makeup classes, and got my hands on any one with a face. I would call my friends, their friends and even approach strangers on the street so I could practice and enhance my skills. And that’s how Melisa J. Beauty began. I went from chasing friends and family to practice to getting phone calls from people to do their makeup. It took a lot of time, patience and work to get to this point in my makeup and hair artistry career but I wouldn’t change ain’t part of my journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting started was easy but staying the course was much more difficult. The artistry part came naturally, but I really had to learn the business skills needed to make my passion a success. The number one advice, I give to any aspiring entrepreneur or business owner is do what you love because that will bring you through when the process gets rough.

I am a hair and makeup artist. I specialize in bridal styling and makeup education for the everyday women. I am best known for my natural glam makeup style. When a women sits in my chair, I focus on enhancing her natural features as opposed to making her look completely different so when she looks in the mirror she still sees herself. I am most proud of the diversity in my portfolio which is also what sets me apart from many other artists in this area. When I first decided to become a makeup artist, I know I wanted to work with women of different ethnicities and skin tones. That was really important to me so I made sure to go above and beyond to practice on women with different skin tones until I was confident enough to do makeup on any complexion from fair to deep tones.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to do more teaching this year. I offer personal/group makeup lessons and lessons for makeup artists. I have learned so much thus far on my journey and teaching allows me to share my skills and expertise. Many women want to learn how to do their own makeup but think it has to very tedious or they need a thousand and one products because of the YouTube tutorials they have watched. And it really doesn’t, I break it down and show them how to make use of what they already have and the makeup essentials needed to create the look they want to achieve.
