Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Lewis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rebekah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had an interest in pregnancy and birth. I loved chatting with friends and family about their plans and experiences as a teenager on, I guess you could call me a “birth nerd”!
I started my higher education planning to become a nurse but life challenges and diverse interests led me to degrees in Business Management and Political Science. After college, I worked for a while in an office setting but I wasn’t happy. I knew I wanted to work for myself doing something that I was passionate about that made a difference. During my first pregnancy, I discovered Doulas and the amazing role they play in birth. I knew then that, I was going to hire a Doula and this would be my career!
My first daughter was born in October 2013 and I was already making plans to transition careers. It took a while, I moved from a full time job to a different part time job. Eventually, we moved houses in 2015 when our second daughter was born so we could be a one-income family allowing me to start my business and spend time with our children. I started working as a Birth Doula in December 2015 and finished my certification in February of 2016! In June of 2016, I also began working at Inanna Birth Center in Denton as a Birth Assistant. Since my start in birth work, I have had the honor to support almost 100 families in their birth experiences! Two years into being a doula, I know I made the right choice. This is my calling and I love supporting women as they become mothers!
Has it been a smooth road?
As with life, all things have their ups-and-downs but overall this has been a smooth journey! I face many of the same challenges that all mothers face. It can be difficult to balance our home life with work. My children are young and I want to give them my very best and treasure these years. I also love serving my clients and consider it a great honor to be invited into such an important, sacred time in their lives and I want to give them my best. I have found that routines are the best way to find a happy medium. Planning ahead helps me get everything done (and learning to let things go).
Birth work also comes with a lot of unknown, everything you plan comes with the caveat of “if I’m not at a birth”. It has been a lifestyle change for my family but I love that when I’m headed out the door my daughters know, I am leaving to do something important. My four year old can tell you that I “help ladies have babies”. I don’t take for granted that I have the privilege to work at something so important and rewarding.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rebekah Lewis Birth Services – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Rebekah Lewis Birth Services offers Birth Doula support to families in North Texas. I also offer Placenta Encapsulation and Postpartum Belly Binding services for my doula clients or for families that would like that service alone.
I work hard to be continually learning and expanding my knowledge base and skill set to provide the best support possible. I have taken advanced training in Rebozo techniques, bereavement support, TENS for labor, and Accupressure for Labor.
I make the specialized for labor and birth TENS units available to all of my clients that are interested. Many have reported that it has made a huge difference in their pain tolerance for labor! I offer that as part of my doula packages at no additional cost to give my clients every comfort measure I have available to me.
In my two years and 90+ births, I have gained invaluable experience that helps me to walk into any birth setting or situation and have confidence that I can support my clients. I have supported unmedicated births both in and out of the hospital. I also support clients who choose to utilize pain medications including epidurals! I have supported both scheduled and unplanned cesarean births. Regardless of how the birth unfolds, it is a beautiful new beginning!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the Dallas/Fort Worth area! I grew up in the Denton area and returned after college to make it home. I love that within our Metroplex we have world-class restaurants, museums, theater and music! Another great thing about DFW is the amazing birth options we have available to us! When talking with other doulas and birth workers from all over the country, I have really come to appreciate our birth diversity. Texas is very birth friendly, we have the choice to receive prenatal care from a variety of providers including Certified Nurse Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives and Obstetricians. We have amazing providers offering beautiful out-of-hospital birth options both in our plentiful birth centers or home. DFW has so many awesome obstetricians providing great care including beautiful hospital births full of choices, family centered cesareans, vaginal births after cesareans (even after multiple cesareans)! We truly are in a unique location with a plethora of options for whatever birth experience you desire.
