Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kennedy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always love sports and science. I played tennis, basketball, and ran track and eventually went to Colorado Mesa University on a full scholarship for chemistry and biology and to play tennis. During my undergraduate work, I met our team physician and discovered sports medicine! After college, I started medical school at Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine under a full Naval Health Professions Scholarship. After 4 years of med school, began my Navy career at Navy Hospital Camp Pendleton as a family medicine intern. The Navy gave me the opportunity to become a flight surgeon, so from California, I headed to Pensacola, Florida to attend the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute.
Upon graduation, I earned my flight surgeon wings and was stationed at Naval Air Station, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City. The next four years were some of the best years of my life taking care of pilots and aircrew and making life long friendships. In 2010, I was honorably discharged and headed to Dallas, Texas to begin a Family Medicine Residency at UT Southwestern. After 3 years and another graduation, headed to the University of California in San Diego for a sports medicine fellowship, where I was privileged to take care of athletes of all ages in the sunny beautiful weather. Finally, completed my medical training and returned to Texas as faculty with the University of North Texas Dept. of Orthopedics.
After 2 years, I was recruited to Arlington with my current group, Sideline Ortho and Sports. Now, I take care of athletes of all ages and all levels, volunteer time at football games, sporting events like USA Judo and roller derby and endurance races, I am part of a free clinic for the local student-athletes. Throughout the year, I also give presentations and talks to organizations and students around the DFW area. During all of that, I was married, gave birth to super cute little boy and enjoyed learning how to play the banjo.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to becoming a physician is a very long, very challenging road but is completely worth the countless hours studying and losing sleep to help others in need. The hardest part of what I do is being away from my family. As my son gets older, I will be able to bring him with me as a I cover sports on the sideline and he can see what I do first hand.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a primary sports medicine physician, which means that I take care of all ages (7 to over 100) helping them to stay pain free and active to achieve their goals of returning to sport/activity. I treat musculoskeletal injuries including joints, bones, tendons, backs, provide concussion management and regenerative treatments like platelet rich plasma and take care of athletes with sport-related medical problems like exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and female athlete triad. Because, I am an osteopathic physician, I can also do manual therapy to treat conditions like sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
My group also includes an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports related surgeries and two amazing physician assistants. What sets us apart is that we have a great working rapport with local schools and certified athletic trainers (ATC), so we do a great job about getting athletes in, evaluated, treated and back to sport. The ATCs have my personal number as well as our own ATC’s that helps to coordinate care and take care of their athletes in a timely manor. The relationship we have with our patients, athletes, schools and ATCs are what I am most proud of as a provider.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. The DFW area is a mecca for sports and athletes and with being centrally located, we are in a good position to take care athletes from all over the Metroplex.
