Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebeca Garcia.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About 7 years ago I was at my lowest point in my life. I literally had nothing but my family. I had just been through a very dark time. An event in my early 20’s led to a downward spiral of events and I lived and survived situations that I would never want my children to go through. I went through a nasty divorce and I thought our fighting would never end. I recall the exact moment where I came to realize that I wanted more out of life. I was feeling sorry for myself and drinking a bottle of wine with a group of “friends.” I remember looking around and I thought, “This is not what I want my life to be.” I just wasn’t focusing on my family’s future. After that night I focused on beginning & living my best life.
I found a job, worked 9-5 and also began my own business; Refined Wreaths. I started dressing better, I started enjoying food more, coffee shops, my kids’ sports. I never thought I’d be one of those people who would be able to travel; but I started traveling. I’ve been able to see so much of the US and Mexico; something I never thought I’d get to do. I started a lifestyle page on Instagram to chronicle my love for fashion, food and travels. I found a community of women that inspired my next endeavor.
I created a group, Fort Worth Mavens; that basically just brings the creative types together to make friends and build relationships. I still have my Refined Wreaths business and will soon be busy creating Spring and Summer wreaths! I also began a new career path at The Gladney Center for Adoption. I mean, how beautiful to be a tiny piece in finding children a loving, forever home.
I also found love again and we’ll be married in 2019. Our first family trip of the year is next week and our family couldn’t be more excited! It’s a blessed life and I couldn’t’ be more thankful. Not only for the good times, but for the bad times that have brought me to where I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My Mother, who has been there for me every step of the way; has always taught me that no matter what, you have to keep moving forward. During the times where I was down and feeling sorry for myself, she’d tell me, “I didn’t raise you to be a weak woman.” And that’s what I repeat to myself when times are tough. Yes, I’ve made mistakes; but I feel I’ve overcome them and have made so many of my dreams into a reality. One of my favorite bloggers (Sincerely Jules) has a saying that I fell in love with, and I feel that it so describes my daily mindset: Dream. Believe. Achieve.
Refined Wreaths & creator of Fort Worth Mavens – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I started Refined Wreaths after I saw a friend create a Halloween Wreath. I thought, “How cool, surely I’m capable of making one!” So, I made one for myself, then people began asking me to make one for them. Slowly, a hobby turned into a small business. I was getting so many orders I was working my 9-5 job and coming home and staying up until 1am to finish my orders. I’ve been in business now for 6 years and it makes me so proud to see my customers display my creations on their home. I’ve grown from making only wreaths, to making garlands and tree toppers for Christmas. I’ve participated in many holiday vendor events and can’t wait until the next ones!
Fort Worth Mavens was envisioned by my sister and me. There wasn’t much of a community of Bloggers or Influencers in Fort Worth. I thought it would be nice to have some sort of community here where entrepreneurs and creative types could come together to share our work; and maybe just get together for brunch once a month. We encourage and support one another in our endeavors. We want to display the best trends of Fort Worth. Whether it’s where to go to eat, who does our hair, who does great makeup; or who’s outfit we love on any particular day. We have women who are married, some single, some are mothers; it’s very diverse. We often get asked; “Do we have to have a blog or have a stylish Instagram?” And the answer is no! We welcome everyone who wants to make friendships and build relationships.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
“Your children are very well behaved” from a stranger is success. It doesn’t matter where you work, how much money you make, where you’ve traveled to or how many shoes you have in your closet; being complimented on your children is the best form of success. This means, that no matter how many hours you work in the day, how much time you have to yourself; you still have found a way to juggle everyday life and to also raise decent humans.
