Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor McMillan.
Taylor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up loving fashion (thanks to my great grandmother Hazel Olive) and always dreamt of opening up my own store. After getting my degree in fashion design and merchandising and working in the industry since I was 16, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my dream. I did not have any money to start so I clipped coupons to save up some of my grocery money until I had $300. I took that $300 to purchase my initial inventory which I sold on Facebook. I was shocked when the items sold out in less than 10 minutes. From there I kept reinvesting and then branched out to have a website. I was even more shocked when we reached over a million dollars in sales within the first 6 months of launching hazelandolive.com. We then added a storefront location in Rockwall. We currently operate our online headquarter location in Rockwall as well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started the business I was working 18 hours a day 7 day a week to get all of the orders out. I took my first day off of work about 2 years in. A lot of long days but wouldn’t change it for the world.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hazel and Olive – what should we know?
We are known for adding about 10-20 new styles daily (both online and in our storefront location). This has really set us apart since we always have unique items and so much variety. We are known online for our fast, same day shipping. Our company also gives back so a portion of all purchases give back both locally and globally.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A strong work ethic. I grew up watching my dad work really hard and definitely learned to give my career my everything from him.
