Meet James Tennison, Artist in Langley

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Tennison.

James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. After graduating from Art Center College of Design in California in 1982, I moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area and began me free-lance illustration career. My clients included the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Monthly, D Magazine and many other regional and national clients. I then transitioned into painting commissioned portraits for institutions and families. My works include the official portraits of Governors Rick Perry and Ann Richards which hang in the Rotunda at the State Capitol in Austin. I have also painted portraits for Southern Methodist University, U. T. Southwestern Medical Center, Texas Instruments, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, as well as many portraits for families. I now divide my time between producing commissioned portraits and fine art paintings for galleries.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? My career path has been very rewarding and I am extremely grateful to be able pursue my passion. I love my job!

James Tennison Artist – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition? I specialize in painting portraits, landscapes, animals and local subjects where I live. It is a privilege to paint what inspires me and to hopefully bring joy and pleasure to others.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on? As a portrait artist it would be painting the official portraits of Governor Ann Richards and Governor Rick Perry for the Texas State Capitol. As an oil painter, being elected a Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America. Also, being designated a Signature Member of the California Art Club, an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Art Club in New York City and a Signature Member of the Portrait Society of America.
