Meet Steve Trentham of Dallas Underground Strength & Fitness in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Trentham.

Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been involved in sports and exercise growing up. I was involved in wrestling, football and martial arts early on, and in the early 90’s I became obsessed with bodybuilding and training. Fun fact, I must have bought every edition of Muscle and Fitness and FLEX magazine while in high school. I received my first certification in 1995 from Fitness Professionals Association, and this was the beginning of my journey.

After completing my degree, I have been privileged to work in multiple area of health and fitness: athletic performance, personal training, corporate wellness, physical therapy, and I specialized in prenatal/postnatal fitness for over 7 years.

All these experiences helped shaped the type of fitness trainer I wanted to become.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business you have your good times and complete failures, but the question is can you get up and try again.

In 2003, I was training at a facility called the Plano Health Club, and recently ran a very successful program called the 2000 lb. Melt-Off Challenge where the goal was to take a group of people (100) and lose 2000 lbs. of body-fat in 6 weeks in response to Dallas being named in the Top 10 of the 100 Fattest Cities in America by Men’s Health Magazine.

Shortly after finishing the challenge, we were getting ready to begin another challenge, and drove up one day to discover the club was closing, All the memberships had been sold to another fitness chain, and I essentially was out of a job.

One other challenge is balancing family and work.

I have a wife and a daughter who is graduating from Plano West this year; It has been a struggle on more than one occasion to make sure I was at my daughter’s events. I’ve missed athletic events and school events, however the last 4 years I made it a priority to make my daughter’s wrestling tournaments, I may have missed 3 over the last 4 years, and I am very happy with that.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dallas Underground Strength & Fitness – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In 2009, I ventured out and created Dallas Underground Strength and Fitness with the intention of working with primarily athletes and wrestlers… and boy did I miss the mark on that one!

Instead of high level wrestlers, the primary clientele we attracted were women over the age of 35 and we haven’t looked back since! My approach with our clients was simple. I viewed every client who we had the privilege of working with as an athlete who wanted to move better, get stronger and live vibrantly.

What I am most proud, and what drives me to get out of bed every day is showing a woman / mother / grandmother they can be strong and fit and that women are NOT the weaker of the two sexes. To watch a woman in her 50’s deadlift over 100 lbs. and to see the expression on her face, is priceless.

One area we are beginning to focus on is working with volleyball athletes. Chrissy Richards, one of our coaches, played D1 volleyball at Oklahoma, and coaches at the club level. An interesting note is I trained Chrissy when was enrolled in high school at Plano East Senior High, and I was privileged to watch her develop at OU and watching her develop as a volleyball and a performance coach… proud coach moment here.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Take over the world!

Seriously, I am just focusing on developing our programs and developing our coaches to stand toe-to-toe with any other program in the nation.
