Meet Surya Barrow of Urban Yoga in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Surya Barrow.

Urban Yoga opened its doors in the summer of 2010. Their founder and director Surya left an almost 10-year career as a Federal attorney to follow her dream of creating a warm and inviting studio where folks can come to feel vibrant, joyful and connected. Honoring that dream, their amazing kula of instructors, therapists and bodyworkers are committed to dynamic and holistic wellness through yoga, dance, movement, conscious retreats and healing arts.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since yoga is for me a hybrid between a love affair and a business, there are inherent challenges to stay heart-centered in all we do. We don’t make “business” decisions; we make human decisions. Everything involves a conversation and there’s a lot of tweaking. I don’t always get it right. I get it as right as I can at the moment. We’re working together as the Urban kula – family – and also each of us is on a spiritual path.

This can be a huge challenge — there are moments of ease and synchronicity, moments of the plateau, and then moments when the evolution begins again. The rhythms make it exciting and challenging. Another challenge is explaining how we are unique. Any student who walks through our doors can palpably feel the positivity and inclusivity of our studio. The moment you walk through the doors you understand — Urban Is Magic.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Urban Yoga – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We have a truly inviting and welcoming community. People are drawn to our studio because we offer a traditional style of yoga with a zen and zany joyfulness. That means we laugh a lot and keep it light. We move slowly. There’s no forcing. Life is short, so let’s enjoy and savor each breath. This way, a moment can be an eternity. So, we’re known for our juiciness and depth.

We’re also known for the diversity of our practices. We offer Hatha, Vinyasa, yin, restorative, kundalini and bhakti yoga, along with meditation, gong baths, dance and healing arts. We listen as teachers; we respond to the needs of our students. Our teachers are devoted practitioners with decades of experience, so the well is deep. This makes each class rich, exciting and profound. We offer lasting, meaningful experiences that change people’s lives.

Our retreats are extraordinary too — we’ve been to India three times, Italy, Bali, Santa Fe, and we have upcoming trips to Mount Shasta and Peru.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For the last 5 years, I’ve been playing harmonium and offering Bhakti yoga. I’ve just laid down 9 tracks for my first album and I can’t wait to share this with our community and whomever it is meant for. It’s huge for me as I never knew I had it in me. That’s yoga for you. It brings up your hidden best. Beyond that offering, I practice not knowing what’s next.
