Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison McStravick.
Alison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I picked up my first camera without any intention of becoming a professional photographer. My husband started a music blog for the annual SXSW music festival many years ago, and because he rapidly grew a rather large following, we were given press passes to document the festival. Knowing absolutely nothing, I walked into a Best Buy, purchased an entry level DSLR, determined to learn the ins and outs of my new gear. Photographing music and the energy it brings quickly became a passion.
I began photographing friends and family in an effort to branch out and learn more. Once I gained my confidence and realized my work was of real value to others, I put myself out there and created Julia Alison Photography. I’m in my fifth year of business and I couldn’t be happier doing what I love full time. I am so glad I took a chance, stepped into the unknown and trusted myself enough to follow my dreams.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! Absolutely not! From finding my voice and style to the backend, behind-the-scenes challenges you face when running a business, there are plenty of times I’ve felt lost along the way. The thing that’s surprised me the most about what I do, is that running a photography business is only about 10% actually taking pictures. I’ve had to develop a real business sense, and it’s truthfully been pretty fun learning and growing in that way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Julia Alison Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
At Julia Alison Photography, I specialize in photographing weddings and families. I have a vibrant, authentic and joyful style. I’ve been told that what sets me apart is the experience I provide, the quality images I deliver and how much I care about my clients. I love each and every family and couple I work with, and documenting precious memories for my clients is something I cherish and deeply value.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Perhaps luck has played a role in my life, although I believe that success and happiness comes from intention and purpose.
