Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for photography started in childhood. From the first time I clicked the shutter on a 35mm film camera, to my first time in a dark room developing and printing my own film (in high school), and all the way through the digital age- photography has been a part of me. The story that it tells, the beauty that it portrays and the art that is so incredibly unique based on the artist’s interpretation has captivated me for so many years.
I was a hobbyist for many years before I decided to turn my hobby into a business. I have invested my time and money into valuable workshops, resources and further learning, as well as just experimenting and trying new things with my work… but It’s truly been invaluable for me as a professional in this industry to surround myself with women that value community over the competition!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth? No, definitely not! Worth it? Absolutely! One thing I really struggled with in the beginning was putting my work out there for all to see and believing that I was offering quality work, a service of value and one that was worth charging for.
There are so many talented artists and seeing their work can be so inspiring but also crippling if you allow yourself to fall into the “comparison trap”. Learning to be inspired, but at the same time keep my focus on my own journey has been crucial!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Angela Jackson Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
As the photographer and owner of Angela Jackson Photography, I specialize in newborn and family portraiture.
Under each of those genre’s, I offer a mix of lightly posed traditional portraits along with images that tell your unique story. I strive to capture authentic connections and interactions between you and your family. I offer sessions in a variety of locations including the clients home, the hospital (for newborns), outdoor scenic locations as well as a couple of indoor studio spaces that I rent out when needed.
As a mom myself, I pride myself on the special care and attention I give to the mothers that hire me. My goal is always to make mom feel comfortable, relaxed and beautiful so that she can enjoy her children and allow me to do the hard work! I make everything as seamless and easy as possible… For lifestyle newborn sessions, I make sure that my clients know that they do not have to be “picture ready” when I arrive! I encourage moms to take their time, let me start with the baby for some individual shots and allow mom to pamper herself and finish getting ready for the session in peace!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I actually don’t believe in luck. I believe that where I am right now is a direct result of conscious decisions and choices (made by myself or others) including my choice to follow God and prayerfully seek out His plan for me.
