Today we’d like to introduce you to Porsha Jay Allison.
Porsha Jay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my professional singing career opening up for saxophonist Vandell Andrew and singer/musician Quentin Moore. I quickly transitioned from being an opening act to running my own r&b cover band where I performed locally in Dallas, TX monthly.
From there I joined the top 40’s live cover band industry, and have worked as a lead singer in various live bands around Dallas for the last 3 years, singing a wide range of genres of music and am currently a lead singer in the traveling cover band “Satellite” of Stargazer Productions based in Austin Texas.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I definitely experienced some challenges, as the entertainment industry is not known to be the most lucrative lol. Initially, it was a struggle learning the cover band industry in general, networking, and getting my name out there.
Once I figured out what kind of singer I was, I had to work hard to find a band that best fit my style of singing and performing. I started off singing only R&B and hip-hop, being heavily influenced by various artists that I admired. It took time to develop my own performance skills as an individual artist and I then fell in love with all kinds of genres of music. It was a journey working with different musicians and transitioning to a newer band that better fit my style and provided more opportunities for growth and higher paying gigs.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Satellite Band of Stargazer Productions – what should we know?
Porsha Jay is not just a singer but a performer. I really pride myself on being diverse and able to connect with any crowd, of any race, or age group when performing. On a regular performance, I sing, dance, and sometimes rap, a total of 4 hours. Literally, the whole time our shows are fun and full of energy. We really have a great time and it means a great deal to me that my audience does too.
I perform a range of R&B, pop, rock, country, and some hip hop and I sing/rap about 40-45 songs in a single performance, which is a lot of hard work. As a black woman in the cover band industry, I set myself apart by having a great work ethic and presenting my energetic spirit, my sex appeal, and my strong singing voice in a package that can market to all kinds of people.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I absolutely would not be where I am today without my current band manager, previous band managers, and bandmates. Currently, working with Cord Stone at Stargazer Productions has provided me so much experience and amazing opportunities! He keeps my bandmates and I booked every week and I am very grateful for that. Over the years I have worked with so many talented musicians around Dallas and I have learned a lot from each one of them.
Also, I have to make mention of my friend/cousin and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Vandell Andrew who has been nothing but a great support system and mentor to me over the last 5 years. I have learned a lot about the live band industry from him as well.
