Check out Penny Born’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Born.

Penny, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
The irregularities of nature inspire my work using clay as my media. The markings and patterns on my work are often formed by using natural elements such as driftwood and shells from the Gulf of Mexico beaches or even leaves fallen from the trees in my backyard. I also have a ‘heritage collection’ of bowls that uses crocheted cloths that my grandmother made over 60 years ago that I press into the clay. I am originally from South Africa, but moved to the USA 24 years ago, and now call Dallas home.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I work with clay and hand-build most of my pieces. I start with a slab of clay and cut and join pieces to form my bowls. I enjoy achieving a unique look with my glazing style. All of my bowls are one of a kind pieces and all have a rustic, organic look to them. I grew up at the coast in South Africa and the ocean is an inspiration to the colors I choose to glaze with.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Do it because you love it.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I work out of a small studio in my home in Richardson and sell my art at local venues around the DFW area. My website has a list of events where I will be. PennyBPottery.com
