Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Dowdy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom started decorating cakes when I was 2 because she wanted my brother and I to remember her making our birthday cakes. This is one of the many reasons I named my Bakery after her. I grew up around decorating cakes and truly took an interest at 10, I did my first wedding cake when I was 14 with my mom’s encouragement and support every step of the way.
Decorating and baking is my passion, I took a short break while in college but realized decorating was what I really wanted to do in life. I feel so blessed to play a part in so many people’s special days.
I worked for a local bakery for 14 1/2 years then moved to another bakery for another 2 1/2 years before I finally got the courage to start my own place. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m not sure there were many struggles beyond having to move back in with my parents as an adult. Although I don’t think it was a struggle more than an adjustment to a necessity of helping my business grow. I’m so thankful for my family and their support.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Daisy Cakes, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in custom cake designs. We will also provide Cakes, cookies and pies for customers to come in and enjoy by the piece or take a whole cake or pie for last minute celebrations or just because who doesn’t love a sweet treat.
We take a lot of pride in our quality. I believe not only do our cakes and sweet treats look beautiful but taste delicious as well.
I learned how to decorate with buttercream before fondant even existed in the states. I pride myself on the designs I’m able to do in buttercream most people can’t.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I really do feel blessed after working for 16 years for other bakeries I took the leap to go out on my own. Two years later I’ve built my business on nearly 100% referrals. Now I’m averaging over 50 orders a week as well as desserts for Al Biernat’s.
