Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlene Johnson.
Darlene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been an esthetician since 2003. I’ve worked for plastic surgeons, medi spas and Nordstrom in cosmetics. When I moved to Dallas in 2010 my goal was always to work in the beauty industry and eventually open up my own spa. I tried to transfer my license from Washington state but they would not let me transfer it and going back to school was not an option for me. I had to get a corporate job to survive. I never gave up on my dreams of doing what I love to do, so I reapplied in 2014 and miraculously they issued me a Texas state esthetics license. That’s when I started The Glam Spot! It has been an interesting journey with a few locations but I am happy to be where I al today located in Frisco, TX. I focus on eyelash extensions, brows, and makeup and I love it. Just this year, 2018, I decided to change my business name to reflect the journey I have been on both personally and professionally this last 5 years. My new name is Beauty For (L)ashes from the scripture in Isaiah 61:3 about beauty for ashes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, lots of bumps along the way. Starting from me trying to transfer my license from Washington State, Texas said I didn’t have enough hours but I had been licensed and worked as an esthetician in Seattle since 2003. That was a huge blow to my goals and plans upon moving here. Moving locations a few times, starting and starting over a few times have been hard. I moved to Texas with my 7yr old daughter, $10K to my name, a 2000 Honda Accord and no job or place to stay. I know this is my calling. I love empowering women to be their best selves all while looking fabulous. I’ve made some amazing connections and friendships with clients. My best advice is never to give up! If you know you’ve been called to do something, do it!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beauty For (L)ashes – Isaiah 61:3 (formerly The Glam Spot) – what should we know?
I specialize in natural looking eyelash extensions and healthy lashes. I’m most proud of the journey at this point. I’m not a millionaire and I have had many setbacks in my time here but I am more passionate now since dealing with failure than I have ever been. My attitude and customer service set me apart, I’m not your “typical” beauty industry professional. I take pride in being on time and providing an amazing experience for all my clients.
