Today we’d like to introduce you to Nette Mayfield.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2001, I was a certified Computer Technician working for GSS, a sub-company owned by Comp USA. Every morning, I used to watch/listen to the news while I got dressed for work. On the morning of September 11th, I saw that there was breaking news. The screen then revealed a plane crashing into one of the twin towers in New York. I automatically thought that it couldn’t be real, so I immediately turned to several other news stations. Each news channel reported the same news. I then went back to the channel I was initially on and saw another plane hit the second building. After that, the screen went blank. The crashes of planes during 9/11 was also the beginning of the crash of the Information Technology (IT) industry. Weeks after 9/11, computer companies began to lay people off; I was one of them. I didn’t want to experience being taken out of a job so quickly ever again. That’s when I thought back to what I was skilled in and enjoyed the most: hair and making others feel confident. I immediately enrolled in Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails. 17 years later, I remain a self-employed professional Hair Stylist in Grand Prairie, Tx. Being a Hair Stylist has allowed me to live a good, comfortable life all while bringing happiness and confidence to other women, men, and children.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success hasn’t always been smooth. In the beginning, there were long hours. My advice to young women starting their journey is to stay humble, focused and learn financial management that works for them. Also, in the midst of helping others remember to invest in yourself.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Essence Image Hair Studio – what should we know?
I’m a professional hair stylist that specializes in short and healthy hair. I’m most proud that my brand as a professional is faithfulness. I have been blessed with a faithful clientele some new and some that have remained with me for 17 years. What sets me apart from others is my promptness and no long salon time for clients.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
One woman that has inspired me is Bobbie Edmonds. Bobbie is a well known African American Attorney in Fort Worth, TX. As a teen, Bobbie hired me as an employee. She helped me open my first bank account, fed me while I was saving for a car, and molded me as a teen to become the woman I am today.
