Hemal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story is a story of America. Sheer persistence and hard work are all it takes to be successful in America. I came to this country from India in 1997 with virtually nothing in pocket to study in the USA. I worked all kinds of odd jobs (I flipped burgers, worked as a security guard, washed dishes) to sustain myself and finish engineering school. I started a career and a family. I worked hard, received guidance from amazing mentors. Eventually, I pursued Business school with a job and family. After I graduated from business school, I started the first of three businesses. 1 Solar Solution, LLC is the most recent and the most rewarding.
We enjoy making a difference in people’s lives. The benefits of solar panels affect families financially and environmentally for the better. We have been blessed to have such extremely happy customers. This feels like true success.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has never been a smooth ride. But I believe that the more struggles you get, the more you learn and enjoy.
I remember those days in school when I walked daily for 3 miles as I didn’t have a quarter to spare for bus fare. I remember my first business, poured my heart and soul into it, but it failed miserably. Through this experience, I learned very important lessons in life. If you run fast on the wrong road, you will reach a failed destination quickly and hard. The more time you put into planning at the beginning, the less you spend later in avoiding failures.
I remember my 2nd business which I still own. We planned it well. Three years of relentless struggle, but it worked well in the end as it was planned well.
Today, I own a successful multimillion dollar business in technology, that I love. Working for the community and trying to give back to society is rewarding. The road was bumpy but well worthwhile.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 1 Solar Solution story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a solar panel company, and solar is our expertise. Simply put, we help people save the environment and money at the same time.
Our process is to build solar panel systems for clients (residential and commercial) based on real electric usage. We offer detailed proposals that cover how many solar panels a client will need, what percentage of their usage will be replaced with solar energy, and exactly how the solar system would benefit the environment. We also compare old electric bills with the cost of going solar to illustrate the exact savings gained from making the switch.
Our solar expertise doesn’t stop at educational quotes. Our implementation process is one of a kind. We have an internal installation crew, and each member specializes in solar installation. Because we solely focus on solar in every aspect, you can trust that we are the best in the industry.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Anybody can be lucky, but the process to convert short-term luck into long-term gain requires effort and persistence.
That being said, I was fortunate enough to come across an article in the newspaper that inspired me to quit my job at the time and start this business. Still, it took a lot of hard work to make is as successful as it is.
