Today we’d like to introduce you to Jewels Clark.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jewels. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
2017 was the worst year.
Seriously, if we talked about the number of near mental breakdowns over relationships, family, heartbreak, money, and death your jaw would be on the floor. Luckily for me though, what was the worst year of my life catapulted me into the best frame of mind.
How To Be Social was born in 2017.
It started just as a blog and has turned into a community of creatives and young entrepreneurs who are looking to push past their limits and find the joy in life. How To Be Social used to just be a blog post every week, but now? We have a podcast called “Story Time”, a vlog called “Thought Talks” and we just threw our first event called “Succeed At Any Age.”
The vision of How To Be Social is to connect entrepreneurs and creatives in an environment that feels like home and inspires them to be their best. We continue to cultivate this with events, featured blog pieces and podcasts. All you need to join the community is to go to HowToBeSocial.blog to subscribe to the newsletter and if you have a story to tell – write it up and send it to us!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. My grandmother who taught me how to read and write, I had dyslexia, passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2017. This happened right before I got published in the Dallas Observer and D Magazine – could you imagine? I used to read words completely backward and this woman taught me and I excelled so much because of her and I couldn’t even show her, couldn’t tell her thank you. That without her, I wouldn’t have gotten here.
The worst part? She passed away from dementia. She was one of the most intelligent women I have met. It still haunts me how someone so intellectual with a gift for teaching could pass from such a horrible disease.
The thing is I can’t dwell on that. I have to know how proud she would be of me and how big her smile and hug would be if she was here now. So, I keep that memory and carry on, one of learning and perseverance.
I wasn’t always this way though. So many bad things happened last year that I remember thinking at one point, “Nothing worse can happen. I’ve got to be invincible now.”
The thing is life will never be easy by definition but you can learn how to fight those feelings of hopelessness and despair. That is where the tagline came from.
“Helping people push past their mental limits to find the joy in life.”
So, as you know, we’re impressed with How To Be Social – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Currently, I work a full-time job at Social Revolt Agency here in Dallas, TX as an account executive. We work in digital marketing which is always changing but I am learning so much about the fundamentals of marketing.
While Social Revolt is my full-time job (and I truly love my team and work culture) How To Be Social is my full-time passion. Developing new ways to reach people and spreading a message of not only positivity but accountability to your own mental health is something that makes me so excited every time I write.
I would say the fact that I am doing research on the actual marketing side of things. Learning how to really reach people through genuine engagement and tracking what truly works. Most importantly though, that growth is not always good but timely and purposeful growth is the key to success.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
This is interesting to me. I know that since I am still young I have to feed my general understanding of my field before I can be any type of expert but in order to still be sane I need to feed my mental health too.
Currently, I am reading Managing Marketing in the 21st Century (3rd edition) and I listen to the Optimal Living Daily podcast. My favorite podcast to listen to though is Reply All by Gimlet Media – those guys are hilarious and always have the best investigative stories.
