Today we’d like to introduce you to Nijia Britt.
Nijia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from New Orleans, LA, my hometown of crawfish, po boys, Mardi Gras, Jazz, and good times. I possess a baccalaureate degree from Northeast Louisiana University, School of Dental Hygiene, Monroe, LA. While attending Northeast Louisiana University, I became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. I am licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) as a Cosmetologist. I am also licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist by the Texas Board of Dental Examiners and the Georgia Board of Dentistry.
My mission is to transform lives through beauty. Listening to my clients’ needs, allows me to integrate what their needs are, with my expertise, to enhance the beauty they already possess. When working with clients, it is my goal to bring forth the vision that is desired by the client, for which, the client has entrusted to me
I love the transformation of beauty because it helps to transform the mind and spirit. Since beginning my career in beauty, I have learned and taken instruction from some of the leaders in the industry. To stay abreast of current beauty trends, updated technical skills, innovative technologies, and products in beauty; I attend and participate yearly in beauty industry shows, consortiums, and classes. I am interested in the well being and the quality of care and service of the client.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been easy as with any endeavor of significance. I went to cosmetology school part-time. In school, you learn fundamentals, but most of the trend techniques are learned on the job. I entered the industry as an independent contractor, working part-time while I still did Dental Hygiene work. I worked very briefly at a retail salon, but most of my skills are self taught and perfected through trial and error practice. It is very beneficial that I am self motivated, but it is also helpful to have teachers and mentors to help you along the way. “There is also the day to day learning of innovative technologies, using social media and adjusting to changes of their algorithms every 3 months, but I wouldn’t trade the hard work for anything. There’s the skill side of the business, the customer service side, and the administrative side. The administration of the business is by far the toughest. The learning curve for that was my biggest challenge. Clients are my most important resource. They are the heart and mind of every business. The artistic side of beauty is the most fun but having a happy client is of the biggest reward. I remind myself every day that I’m not a businessman, I’m a businessman!” -Jay Z
Please tell us about Nijia Britt.
What sets me apart from most business is that I try not to make my clientele reflective of most churches in America. Sundays from 8-12p are the most segregated times in America. I cater to every ethnic background because I cater to textured hair. I specialize in dealing with clients who have wavy, curly, kinky hair. That encompasses all ethnic backgrounds and curly, kinky hair clients are always looking for solutions to transform their hair. Whether they want straight hair or defined curls, I love to educate them on their options and product choices that may work best for them. Sometimes they’d prefer to wear extensions to change length, volume, or to give their hair a rest from styling, I love to help clients make the best decisions that work for them.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started my career in beauty much earlier in life! I really enjoy it!
