Today we’d like to introduce you to George “Redd Speaks” Rojas.
George, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
All I knew growing up is I wanted to be in Entertainment. In my early 20’s I got hired on to KKDA which is the Radio Broadcasting company for K104 and KR&B. I learned so much there and from that experience I was hooked! I needed more. From there, I went to Television got hired as a Host, and Account Executive at MTV3. I decided to Host and Produce my own television show “Infamous Rhythm TV” to gain more experience, but there was something missing in radio & Television Broadcasting, I needed a “Live Audience!” So, I decided to do Stand Up Comedy. So, I produced my first show at the House of Blues and after getting my first laugh I fell in love! Been Hooked ever since!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve taken my lumps over the head believe me. This business is a hard unforgiving business to be in. You have to be resilient, sensitive to the market and know the brand that your building. Got to pay your dues you know. But once you earn your respect, and your position things get a lot easier.
Please tell us about Redd’s Stand Up Society Comedy Group.
With my experience being on both sides of the business, being an entertainer and a producer gives me the leverage to help and develop a platform for other Comedians to grow. Redd’s Stand Up Society Comedy Group Is something Dallas has never seen. When I first came on to the comedy scene, I saw there was an absence of Direction. It’s kind of every man and woman fins for themselves. What Redd’s Stand Up Society offers is a sense of community and support at the same time creating paying gigs for our comedians.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Lubbock Texas, and two blocks away was a TV station Fox KJ TV 34. I remember coming home from school and watching cartoons and thinking I can’t believe the TV station is two blocks away from my house. One day, I ride my bike over, walk in and asked If this is where they made the cartoons. The lady at the desk laughed and asked me if I wanted a tour of the station. I was amazed at what I saw. That’s when it all became very real to me and I knew one day I would have something to do with entertainment.
