Meet Jen Symes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Symes.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a wedding photographer based in North Dallas offering film and hybrid experiences to my clients. I fell in love with photography in high school and experienced developing negatives in a dark room. My graduation gift was a film camera and I still own it to this day. I went back to school to learn photography in more recent years and loved every minute of it.

I approach my imagery as an artist painting with light. I am a student of light and am constantly watching how light can transform a mundane scene into beauty. I constantly strive to include beautiful, wrapping light in my imagery. Light creates the expression within the image and elevates the subject within the natural scene.

Most recently I have incorporated analog into my workflow and again have found new inspiration and drive to create captivating imagery. Film offers an intangible element to an image in tone, texture and light rendering. I am an artist who is always striving to create more beautiful imagery and putting in the hard work to achieve my goals. I treasure every client and enjoy capturing their love stories in timeless ways for generations to come to share in their wedding day experience.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a wedding photographer who captures couple’s love stories. From their proposal to their engagement and finally their wedding day, I document and create a narrative through photographs to tell their unique love story. If your house was on fire what would be on the very short list of irreplaceable items to grab? I know on the top of the list is your wedding album! It is a day to be remembered and cherished and I am lucky enough that couples trust me to capture this special time in their lives.

I also am a storyteller. I tell the stories of people in love and I do this through photography. I capture the big moments but I never neglect the storytelling elements of the wedding day along with the raw emotions. I have developed an awareness of anticipating when a moment will happen throughout the wedding day and therefore am able to capture it on film.

I am a photographer because I love art and creating art through photography is very fulfilling. As a photographer you must master all the technical aspects of creating an exposure but that is only the beginning of creating an image. My eye continues to mature as I create images that are artistic and full of the beauty in life seen through my lens.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
There are many organizations for networking out there to help creatives connect and find support. I enjoy participating in Rising Tide Society in which the slogan, “Community over Competition” truly comes to life. There are monthly gatherings in which creatives can learn something new, cooperative events such as styled shoots and online support through their website and Facebook groups. Finding a networking support community will help to connect the creative with others with similar experiences and struggles.
