Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Buckley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Heather. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from California State University, Chico in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art & Photography. I have been working with photography for the past eight years…. Professionally for four years now! My love for photography started in high school, I picked up my mom’s camera and shot photos of everything around my property of 6 acres….and I have not put a camera down since.
I grew up in the small town of Paso Robles, CA and I moved to Texas 4 years ago to further my career in photography. I never thought that I would end up moving halfway across the country after college graduation, but you have to be brave and take risks. Nothing can substitute the experience!
When I was about to graduate from college, I really doubted myself and a family-friend photographer gave me the best advice and it has stuck with me through out these past few years working on my own and getting my business going. “Your work will sell itself, so be confident in that. There is no class or no person that can lead the way…you have to find it yourself, and honestly you have a great eye. So keep pursuing what you love and in the long run, you will be successful!”-Chris Nelson Photography. San Diego, Ca. She continues to be an inspiration to me!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very up and down experience! I started young and my photography has grown with me throughout the years. Right out of college I knew this was what I wanted to do forever. But being so young and being truly on my own for the first time, not only in a new city but a new state, I wasn’t able to solely just be a photographer, so for the first 2.5 years I worked 2-3 side jobs to be able to pay the bills as well as pursue my passion. But I wouldn’t change a thing! I was completely out of my comfort zone but that made me stronger as a person and a photographer. Now I am at the point where I always pictured my career and life. I am newly married and am full time in photography,
Please tell us about Heather Buckley Photography.
I believe photography is much more than snapping a few great photos. I am extremely passionate about it because I love to capture those special times in life that we want to remember forever. What sets me apart from other photographers is I look forward to getting to know my clients and building relationships. I specialize in portraiture. I love shooting at fun unique locations. I offer many sessions such as high school/college graduates, kids, families, engagements, newborns, events, etc.
If I HAD to pick what kind of portraiture I specialize in, it would be High School Seniors! I LOVE their young exciting spirit, joy, and it is such an important time in their life that I LOVE getting to capture for them. They keep me young 😉 plus I am 26 so technically I still am young to many out there. But that does help me really to relate to them, brings a special bond to my clients and I.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Where I grew up! I was practically born and raised in the same house. We lived in the country side of California on land. It was so much fun running around barefoot outside of the house and electronics. We played make-believe and used our imaginations. It really inspired my artsy side and I remember always wanting to capture photos and videos of my family, our house, and everything we did!
