Meet Elizabeth Carroll of Marriage Boot Camp in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Carroll.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elizabeth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Marriage & Life Enrichment Boot Camp is a 20+ year ministry and was developed by Jim Carroll out of a desire to serve God and to help people that were struggling in marriage. In 2009, I joined Jim in this vibrant, effective, nonprofit organization and am currently serving as the Chief Operations Officer. I have a master’s education in counseling psychology and the author of the book – Marriage Boot Camp: Defeat the Top Ten Marriage Killers and Build a Rock-Solid Relationship.

Having personally experienced the suffering that comes from divorce and failure, my heart’s desire is to help people avoid this devastating and destructive experience and break the patterns of dysfunctional homes that have been passed on generation after generation. The driver of the Marriage Boot Camp is the belief that healthy people create healthy marriages, which lead to healthy families, and rock-solid families become the foundation of a healthy society.

I didn’t have the luxury of growing up in an ideal family. My parents met during the Korean War when my dad was stationed in Japan and despite the fact that neither one of them spoke the other’s native language, were married for over 60 years, until the day my mom died. This was not a happy marriage, and this is where I got my education on relationships. Which of course led me to repeat what I had learned. The good news is that I finally chose to stop the madness, learn from my mistakes, and as often happens, have gone on to teach from having made every mistake in the book. That is the genesis of the Marriage & Life Enrichment Boot Camp. Every one of our directors have learned the tough lessons from their own mistakes and that is how we teach others.

The Marriage Boot Camp is very good at what it does. 60% of the people who enter the Marriage Boot Camp are on the last leg of marriage, either at the door of divorce or having already filed for divorce and about 90% leave the Marriage Boot Camp recommitted to their marriages and to living a purpose-filled life. As a follow-up, we launched a two-year longitudinal study to follow 60 couples who came in ready to divorce to see if, once the Marriage Boot Camp effect wore off, they would stay together. To our surprise and delight, the research came back showing that 80% of the 60 couples were still married. But not just married, they were “happily married!” Compare that to traditional marriage counseling which boasts only a 20% success rate.

You may have seen me on the Doctor Drew Show as a Life Changer, or with Gene Simmons on Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Then in 2012, we were approached by Think Factory Media with a reality TV show idea and we were excited at the prospect of expanding our ministry to healing celebrity couples. How many more marriages could be healed? Of course, we said yes! That led to 7 seasons of the hit TV show, Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars on WEtv.

Our experience doing the Marriage Boot Camp TV show was wonderful but challenging. As TV virgins, we had no idea how reality TV worked. Our finely tuned Marriage Boot Camp choreography was thrown out the window and replaced with the disciplines of filming a TV show, a very different animal. The Marriage & Life Enrichment Boot Camp modality is this: we drop into the places that need to be healed using games, drills, and exercises. We then use the opening to reveal, teach and heal. Drop, teach, heal, and repeat. Finally, we give participants the tools and the book – Marriage Boot Camp: Defeat the Top Ten Marriage Killers and Build a Rock-Solid Relationship, to continue this work on their own and pass their health and wisdom down to the next generation.
