Meet Alexus Ferrell of DJ Lex in the Box

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Ferrell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, broadcast entered my life through a 30-minute television program called, School Zone Dallas, where I was a news reporter for Dallas ISD, This lasted throughout my junior and senior year of high school. This is also where my love for broadcast began. I entered college knowing exactly what I wanted to do- broadcast as a news anchor for WFAA/ FOX/E! News, you name it! No one could tell me any different. It wasn’t until I began to learn about the radio side of broadcast in college that became intrigued. Soon after taking “Radio Broadcasting” with Professor Lance Liguez I was sold. He allowed me to host alongside my good friend, Rachel, on our radio show “The Royal Tea” via UTA Radio. After she graduated I decided to host my very own show, “Lex in the Box” and this is where I began to learn more about myself and what I wanted to do. In the studio in college we had full control over production, talent, music, everything while of course following by FCC standards, which peaked my interests in other fields. After graduation, I applied to Service Broadcasting (K104/KRNB) and played the waiting game. While I waited I dabbled in modeling, photography, even DJing! I had my mind set on not giving up. Long story short, after about a year “waiting” I got the job! This was no easy road but I’ve gotten this far! I believe in myself and I will never stop what I love-radio. Please keep in me I didn’t apply to any other stations-only Service Broadcasting! I was determined. Now I’m doing commercials for the station, photography, and meeting and networking with so many people with so much more to come. With only 5 months under my belt at the station- all this is happening and there’s so much more to come. I couldn’t be in a better place in my career. I’m only 23, so this is only this beginning.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve cried, been frustrated, annoyed, overwhelmed, sad, you name it! But I am here today to say that did not stop me. I suffer from struggles daily. Whether it’s me having car troubles, failing a class, battling haters, finances, I’m human! I make mistakes. The only question is, “will I learn from them?”

Please tell us about DJ Lex in the Box.
Lex in the Box is a brand about good vibes, energy, and a good time. It doesn’t matter if you need photos taken, a DJ or host your next event, or someone to host model your clothing! Lex in the Box is different because how many females do you know that are a “Jack of all Trades” and it doesn’t include singing or dancing? And be honest with yourself.

There aren’t many of us, so I plan to make it known that women can do things just as good as a man if not better. I am most proud of the fact that I’m making it happen. Slowly but surely. Things like this require a lot of time and patience and if you’re willing to put in the work greatness will unfold. I’m doing a little bit of everything and its possible!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I can remember playing Barbie dolls with my older sister. I loved that because we had such an imagination that we would stay up until 2am, even later, in our own world. We had cars, school, churches-everything! I can remember even having a drive thru, haha! Those were the good old days. Huge shout out to Sharda Ferrell, my older sister. She’s a huge part of who I am today.
