Meet Carey Cheaney Sewell of Cheaney Heritage Leather in Callisburg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carey Cheaney Sewell.

Carey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My family has been doing leather work for many generations…it IS what I know. I was raised in a saddle shop in Gainesville, Texas. And although I don’t recall much hands on experience growing up, subconsciously I was aware of the processes and leather procedures that were going on. Throughout the years, I tinkered with various leather projects and about 3 years ago I began to focus my efforts on Peter Pan collars and my own style of leather earrings. Which naturally progressed into wanting to work on bigger projects and getting to know the leather better.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part I haven’t ran into many issues other than my constant aim for the end product, the tiniest of details to be just right. It is those finishing touches and last minute details to make the clutch, bag or earrings perfect that require the upmost attention. It’s that fine tuning that makes my designs lasting and durable over time. Balancing leatherwork with my children has definitely been tricky and a learning process for my little family. But my kids and my husband love leatherwork as much as I do and are quite often in the shop with me.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cheaney Heritage Leather – what should we know?
Cheaney Heritage Leather has been my natural progression of leatherwork so far. My work has evolved into specialty handmade clutches, Hobo bags and much more! I do my best to stay original and true to myself with my unique patterns and designs. I am naturally attracted to simplicity AND functionality….at the same time I love a great scallop and a pop of detail. Leather craft isn’t going anywhere. People have always used leather for clothing and accessories. Personally, I am looking forward to where the journey leads me. Shoes, furniture, luggage, saddles etc. I will continue to explore my talents and push my potential with careful attention to detail as I let inspiration lead the way.

Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
Whether you’re in the Dallas area or any other place, to be a successful maker one should focus on quality and originality. I recommend that a new maker starting out remain true to what they want to create. Try not to let outside influences affect their inspiration.
