Today we’d like to introduce you to Dre Li.
Dre, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always been inspired by the artists in my family. Art was the way to express myself since I was a kid. Through the years, I experimented with many different mediums and it wasn’t until I was working in the music industry, surrounded by everyone with tattoos that I realized I found my outlet.
I tattooed my first tattoo on my best friend while working for the Vans Warped Tour and from that moment, I knew that I wanted to know all about it and needed to do it for life. I was instantly inspired and amazed by the history of tattooing and gained great respect for the tradition. Finding an apprenticeship was important to me and I was lucky to find one at Current Tattooing in San Jose, CA. After that, I really found a family at One Shot Tattoo in San Francisco, where I was welcomed and inspired to grow as an artist. Here I was able to explore different techniques and styles, learning every day. Since moving to Dallas, I have found that same culture at Third Eye Gallery. I continue to be inspired by the incredible artists I am surrounded by and am fortunate to have the best clients. I’m continually surprised and grateful to get do what I love.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My tattooing is inspired by nature, nothing is more beautiful. People get tattooed for many reasons, whether it is to express their beliefs and inspirations, reminders, or a way to be their true selves, being part of that process through my artwork is ineffable. It’s the best when a client looks at their finished piece for the first time and their smile is beaming from ear to ear. You can see their excitement and confidence and I want to continue to help spread that.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Get out there. Go to art shows, museums, galleries. Find the local art scene and introduce yourself. Get involved. Share your art, volunteer, collaborate. Expand and explore outside of your own aesthetic. Talk to people and don’t be afraid to reach out. I have always found that art supports art.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
In the age of social media, I use Instagram, @dre.dayli, as my portfolio and a way to engage with everyone. It’s also a great way for me to plan future travel plans, so please visit my page, request a city and share your favorite piece.
