Today we’d like to introduce you to Keadra Jeter.
Keadra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started as a kid, sitting around watching my brothers draw cars in their school notebooks & saw my mom draw different animals while on the phone with her friends. I didn’t think I would get the artistic gene like everyone else in my family until I began drawing on walls. I don’t know how many times I got a whoopin’ for it but after a while, my mom just stopped, lol. That was the moment I knew I had artistic talent. My first piece was a drawing of my brother who passed away in 2003 & I gave it to my mom as a mother’s day gift in 2007. In January 2017, I began showcasing my work at different shows all over Dallas. Most people say that I have the 90s/urban style of art and it is very unique. From then on, I continued to showcase my art & was able to have my first solo show in February 2018. As of today, I am still improving my skill & also planning for my next solo show in February 2019 to showcase a refined side of my art – a side that came from a mental break from life & meditation.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is a challenge to be an artist, especially a black artist. Artists do not get as much shine & recognition like musicians, bands, rappers, etc. We artists also get screwed over when showcasing and people are like “oh you’re an artist, it isn’t a big deal” but to us, it outrages us when other people profit on our talents and we are left in the dark. A word of advice to all women starting their journey, no matter what it is – my word is to have a strong support team behind you and to always ask questions. There is no such thing as a bad question unless you don’t ask. Have connections with people into whatever you are doing, whether it is art, entrepreneurship, blogging, etc. Those are the people that can help you most.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about K. Jeter Art – what should we know?
I am an artist (painter), photographer, & graphic designer, but known mostly for my art. I am proud of what I do because it is an outlet from the stresses of life. I think what sets me apart is that I don’t put money before my craft. I’ve donated some of my art to various organizations to help a cause.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My most important piece of advice would be to ask tons of questions.
