Meet Trailblazer Vicky Andres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Andres.

Vicky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a love for art and design. I remember being in third grade and making Xanga layouts for my classmates (while I wasn’t playing Neopets!).

I was born in Campinas, Brazil and moved to Texas when I was three. Growing up, I was lucky to spend almost every summer in Brazil with my family, which had a big impact on my creativity and identity.

While living in Denton for college, I took part in starting a print magazine company where I was the Editor-in-Chief for over four years. That experience introduced me to so much — I produced 17 print magazines, managed a team of 30+, art directed photo shoots, curated content, and built an international list of contributors. It also took me to New York for the first time, to throw a release party and art show in Brooklyn.

After the magazine, I started a digital art gallery called Ultra Regular. Now, I live in Dallas and work as an Art Director at an advertising agency and also do freelance graphic design.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Within the successes, there are so many rejections. An early rejection, I’ll always remember is not being accepted for the yearbook staff at my middle school. I’m still proud that just a few years later I became the Editor-in-Chief of my high school yearbook. Rejections help you reevaluate what you really want and how hard you have to work to get there.

My advice to people starting their own projects is to not forget to have fun. When the exhaustion of doing everything by yourself sets in, it’s easy to forget why you started a project in the first place. It’s good to pause every once in a while and remind yourself why you love what you do.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I like to make work that sparkles.✨I always bring a little extra something to a project.

Right now, I am working on TV and digital campaigns for a variety of brands such as Icy Hot and Gold Bond. Working in advertising has taught me to constantly adapt my style according to different brand needs.

For personal and freelance work, I’m drawn to projects that allow me to experiment with color and motion. I’m excited by design trends, fashion and pop culture.
