Meet Mayra Cortez of TruGlam Makeup Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Cortez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mayra. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I have always had a passion for makeup since I was a little girl. I have always wanted to be in the beauty industry, but I never knew how to pursue it. Until one day I just decided to go for it to become a makeup artist. I decided to contact Benni Sanchez who is the owner of Benni’s Makeup Studio in Houston TX and he was here in Dallas giving makeup courses to become a certified make up artist.

With the encouragement of my husband, kids my family and close friends I was determined to start something that I had a passion for and not look back. I was in love with the idea of Enhancing one’s inner beauty and bringing out their personality through Makeup.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing good ever comes easily, especially in an industry like this. You really have to start from the bottom and work your way up. I remember looking at so many artists and wondering if I would ever get to that level, with time and hard work, I am still working my way up to be even better. There were times where I just wanted to give up and put my brushes away because I felt like I wasn’t good enough.

My husband pushed me and motivated me to keep on going and to show out. He always gave me many words of encouragement to keep going. Every time I have an event, and before I walk out the door he always has a saying for me, “he tells me to kill it, love!” He gives me that boost of confidence to go out and do my best for my clients. Makeup artistry has truly been a passion for me, and I am only more determined now more than ever to get my name out in the industry.

You just have to have patience. It is all trial an error, and you will figure it out along the way. You have to be ready to accept criticism because it will only help you improve. Yes, I have made mistakes with, and I have taken those mistakes only as a lesson on how to improve on my artistry skills. I can definitely say that I have been beyond blessed to have so many amazing clients that have come across my path.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am currently a freelance makeup artist. I work for myself out of my home, but I also travel for my clients. I focus on the individual and do my best to enhance their own beauty.

The most satisfying thing for me is when you complete the final look, and you give your client that mirror and their reaction is priceless and when they see themselves in that mirror, and they say, “I love it!” that’s when I know my job is complete! Hearing that makes me feel proud of myself!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I think the thing that I would’ve done differently is study more about marketing/advertising business to learn how to promote myself in the beauty industry.
