Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Nell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has been an important part of my life. My mother uses to play the cello up until college when I was younger she uses to take me to her piano lessons, and she also sings. My father grew up in the 1980’s so he played a lot of that music around me, from Ice Cube to Zapp & Roger and everything in between. I became interested in music at an early age. Growing up, the drummer at my church taught me to play.
In middle school, my parents bought me a trumpet for Christmas. My parents are the main inspiration that propelled me to DJ. I moved to Texas during my freshman year of high school, during that time frame, online mix-tapes were a huge thing. I would come home from school and listen to them until I fell asleep.
When I moved to Dallas, I realized that the radio stations here were a big deal. One of the main inspirations other than my parents that inspired me to DJ were the radio DJ’s I heard on the radio. I didn’t have a steady job during high school because I lacked a vehicle. During my senior year after my birthday, I got a car. So that allowed me to work more and save up for equipment.
Shortly after I graduate high school, I consulted a friend of mine, that had a DJ for her birthday party. He called me, and he gave advice that I still use even today. I haven’t looked back since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. I still feel like I have a lot to prove to myself. One of the most challenging things to do as a DJ is reading the crowd. Some songs will get a reaction with one type of crowd, and it will get the opposite reaction with another.
In the beginning, I had to make adjustments and really develop an extensive library of music. Another obstacle would be that I am my worst critic. After gigs, I have a reflection time on what I could have done better. It is important to make adjustments and move on to the next gig, without harping on past mistakes.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am DJ Nell, entrepreneur, disc-jockey & musician. I create a scenery with music. I specialize in playing hip-hop, r&b, soul, reggae, and EDM. I am a vibe creator. What sets me apart from others is that I create a vibe for my clients and add my own flare to it. I play everything. My objective is to have everyone in the room dancing. It’s almost like creating a soundtrack on the spot for each event that I DJ. Every event I try to make it better than the last one.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For the future, I just plan to do everything I am doing currently, but on a bigger scale.
Pushing my brand further, and putting together concerts and more r&b and soul events. I plan on playing more instruments and doing session work for artists.
