Check Out Amy Kreins’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Kreins.

Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my private practice as a solo psychologist with one office room and a clear goal: to provide high-quality psychological care in a space where clients felt truly seen and supported. In the beginning, I did everything myself—from seeing clients to managing the administrative side of the business. As the need for services grew, I began hiring slowly and intentionally, adding one person at a time each year.
Over time, that small one-room practice grew into a thriving group practice. Today, we have six psychologists and two part-time administrative staff members, and I now own a medical suite that allows us to serve more clients and continue expanding our services. The growth has been steady, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. What started as a solo practice has become a team-centered practice built on clinical excellence, collaboration, and a shared commitment to helping people move forward in their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was that my training as a psychologist prepared me to be a clinician, but it did not prepare me to run a business. I had to learn things like management, hiring, marketing, finances, operations, insurance, and long-term planning as I went.
That learning curve was steep, and honestly, it continues today. As the practice has grown, each new stage has brought new challenges and new responsibilities. While it has been difficult at times, it has also pushed me to grow not only as a psychologist, but as a business owner and leader.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the owner and Lead Psychologist of Kreins Psychological Services, where we provide therapy and psychological assessment services for teens, adults, and seniors. In my own clinical work, I provide Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and other evidence-based treatments for concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, adjustment difficulties, and life transitions.
I am known for being compassionate, practical, and direct in my work. I try to create a space where clients feel understood and supported, while also helping them gain insight, make healthier decisions, and take meaningful steps toward the life they want. My background in health psychology, university counseling, private practice, and geriatric care has allowed me to work with people across many stages of life and with a wide range of concerns.
What I am most proud of is building Kreins Psychological Services from a solo practice into a thriving group practice. I started with one office room, and today we have a team of psychologists and administrative staff serving the community. I am proud that the practice has grown while still maintaining a personal, thoughtful, and client-centered approach to care.
What sets us apart is the combination of clinical experience, evidence-based care, and a genuinely compassionate environment. We are not a one-size-fits-all practice. We work to understand each client as an individual, build on their strengths, and provide care that is practical, respectful, and tailored to their needs.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about McKinney is its strong sense of community. It has grown tremendously, but it still has a welcoming, family-oriented feel, with a beautiful historic downtown, great local businesses, and people who genuinely care about the community.
