Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Smith.
Hi Blake, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Shortly after starting my undergrad journey at Tarleton State University, I started working at the school’s official newspaper. That job, of course, came with photography tasks and I dreaded them because I was no good. (This was at the height of COVID so no one had time to really teach me the basics!) I bought my first camera in 2023 on a whim and didn’t start to teach myself how to use it until 2024-2025 when I got my current job in higher education.
After learning the very bare basics, I decided that photography would be a great way to earn a little extra money on the side. I don’t know how to do anything with minimal effort so I jumped in head first. I invested in my branding, started setting up free shoots to boost my portfolio and began doing door-to-door marketing to get my name out there.
I realized that I was never bad at photography, I just didn’t know what I was doing.
Now, I’m on a 3-5 year journey with the hopes of being able to pursue my passion full-time.
It’s going to be a long journey but one that I couldn’t have imagined embarking on 6 years ago!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Despite the fact that I work full-time in social media marketing, I’m still learning HOW to get my name out in to the community. That has been the biggest struggle! I want to introduce myself to the community in a way that doesn’t feel pushy. I hope to soon attend some really fun spring/summer pop up events to get the word out about my business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Everyone always says how oversaturated the photography industry is but I think each photographer is a little different! My work captures true-to-light photos that showcase what love looks like in every stage of life. Whether you’re in love with your significant other, your family, your business or yourself, I’m the girl for you!
I’m most proud of how much I’ve learned in such a short amount of time. I’m a self-taught photographer which comes with its own level of highs and lows! Luckily, I have such a strong support system of friends/family that are always willing to jump in front of my lens to help me practice.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Again, my support system is HUGE! I have had so many friends get up with me for early morning sessions and some that have stayed up with me for those after hour shoots. They deserve a lot of the credit! Trusting someone to capture your love story can be very scary so I am forever grateful to the people who entrusted me to complete a service I’ve never tried before!
I can’t forget to thank my boyfriend who is always prepared to be there in any way I need him. Whether he’s tagging along to capture behind the scenes shots or serving as a sounding board during the editing process, he is always there.
