Check Out Demetriah Woods’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetriah Woods.

Hi Demetriah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first realized I had a talent for hairstyling when I was 12 years old. I taught myself how to braid, install extensions, and even perform some chemical services. All before TikTok existed and before YouTube became the university it is today.

In 2015, during my sophomore year of college, my mom passed away. Losing my only support system while trying to maintain my GPA was one of the hardest times in my life. It also created financial challenges, so I began servicing students on campus for extra income. At the time, I mainly specialized in braids and sew-in services.

In May 2018, I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Although I originally planned to continue toward a Ph.D., I realized that path was no longer aligned with who I was becoming. Finishing college was something I did in honor of my mom, but I knew hairstyling was where my passion truly lived.

While working a full-time job, I enrolled in cosmetology school in January 2020. Shortly after classes began, COVID happened. Learning through Zoom was definitely a challenge, but being stuck at home gave me the time and space to fully create and develop the Satin Roots brand.

By the time I received my cosmetology license, I had already mapped out my business and immediately rented a booth inside a salon. I quit my full-time job after only a month. I spent the next nine months learning everything I could from four veteran stylists in the salon. There were days I came in with no clients at all just so I could shadow and learn from them. Each stylist specialized in different areas, which helped shape me into a well-rounded stylist.

In 2022, I moved into my own salon suite in Arlington, Texas, where I continued growing my business and clientele. Then in 2023, one TikTok video went viral and changed everything. Since then, I’ve remained booked to capacity and continued expanding the Satin Roots brand. In 2025, I relocated my salon suite to Dallas, where Satin Roots continues to thrive today.

As a first-generation entrepreneur, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. What started as survival eventually turned into purpose, passion, and a growing brand that I hope continues to inspire others. I’m excited to see what the future holds for both myself and Satin Roots.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth road. One of my biggest obstacles was grieving the loss of my mom at a young age. There’s truly nothing that can prepare you for that type of loss, especially while still trying to figure out adulthood. After her passing, I had to learn how to navigate life without parents, guidance, or a mentor to lean on.

At the same time, I also became a caretaker and support system for my siblings. My sister has a mental disability, so balancing grief, responsibility, school, work, and eventually entrepreneurship was extremely challenging. There were a lot of moments where survival had to come before comfort.

Another challenge was attending cosmetology school during COVID. I’m a very hands-on learner, so trying to learn proper hair techniques through Zoom was difficult. On top of that, I’m left-handed and was surrounded by only right-handed stylists, so I felt like I was learning everything backwards at first.

Even with those obstacles, I stayed committed to improving my craft and building a business that would create stability, purpose, and something meaningful for both myself and my family.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed cosmetologist specializing in natural hair and healthy hair care. I’m known for helping women not only reach their hair goals, but maintain them long term through consistency, education, and proper hair care practices.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the community I’ve built through Satin Roots. I always say I have the best clientele ever, and I genuinely mean that. The relationships I’ve built with my clients over the years have become one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

What sets me apart is definitely my personality and the experience I create. I’m a big wave of energy. I laugh, joke and create an environment where people feel comfortable being themselves. I never wanted my salon to feel cold or transactional. I wanted it to feel safe, uplifting, and genuine.

Although I don’t use my Psychology degree in a traditional way, it has helped me tremendously in this industry. Behind the chair, I’ve learned that hair is often connected to confidence, identity, emotions, and even life experiences. I’ve created a space where clients feel comfortable opening up about not only their hair frustrations and hair trauma, but also their families, relationships, careers, health challenges, and everyday life. Building trust and helping people feel seen is just as important to me as creating beautiful hair.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My little sister was my very first cheerleader and my first-ever client. Ever since we were little girls, she would let me play in her hair even though she hated getting it done. I always joke with my clients that she’s the reason I’m not a heavy-handed stylist today.

My best friend, Kalyn, has also supported me in every way a person possibly can. Even though she lives over 230 miles away, she has never hesitated to show up for me. Whether it’s driving four hours to help me set up for an event or simply encouraging me during difficult moments, she has always believed in me and the Satin Roots vision.

My close friend Arial has also played a huge role in my journey. She has reread countless website revisions, helped me make decisions on social media content, and has been the guinea pig for several new styles and products over the years.

All of them supported me back when Satin Roots was just an idea. Not once did they doubt me. If anything, they pushed me harder than I pushed myself at times and constantly reminded me to keep going, even during moments of uncertainty.

I also have to give credit to my clients. Over the years, they have supported me in ways that go far beyond booking appointments. My very first salon suite was probably 75% furnished by my clients and friends. Their support helped me realize that I was more than just a hairstylist to them. Many of my clients know my story personally, and they continue to encourage me to dream bigger, work harder, and keep building. As they often tell me, they simply want to see me win.
