Check Out Destiny Griffin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Griffin.

Hi Destiny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into hairstyling started when I was 8 years old. I watched my mother and an older cousin braid hair in our kitchen, and I remember thinking, “That looks so cool. Maybe I can do that too.” I started practicing on my Bratz doll’s head and quickly realized I had a natural talent for it.
Before long, I became the family’s go to braider. I genuinely loved the creativity of transforming someone’s hair and seeing how confident it made them feel. As I got older, what began as a hobby turned into a side hustle. While I was in high school, I was doing hair for family members, classmates, and even school administrators.
After graduating, I initially enrolled in college as a biology major with plans to become an anesthesiologist. However, as a young mother, I had to reevaluate my path. Because hairstyling was something I was naturally gifted at and truly passionate about, I decided to pursue it professionally. I attended cosmetology school in Jackson, Mississippi, earned my license, and soon after relocated to Dallas, Texas, to build my career.
Moving to a new city as a new stylist was both exciting and challenging, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made. My career grew beyond anything I had imagined, and I was blessed to build a successful business doing what I love. Today, after more than a decade in the beauty industry, I’m still passionate about my craft and committed to reaching even greater heights as a stylist, entrepreneur, and mentor.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey into hairstyling has been incredibly rewarding, but it hasn’t always been a smooth road.
As I grew older, I became the family’s go to braider and eventually started doing hair for classmates and others in my community. While I loved the creativity and the confidence it brought to others, balancing school, responsibilities, and building a small client base at a young age wasn’t always easy.
After graduating high school, I briefly pursued a biology major with plans for a more traditional career path. However, becoming a young mother led me to reevaluate my priorities and ultimately commit to hairstyling. Choosing a nontraditional path to make a living came with its own set of challenges, requiring resilience, adaptability, and a strong belief in myself despite uncertainty.
Attending and later relocating to Dallas, Texas, brought a new set of challenges. Starting over in a new city meant rebuilding my clientele from scratch, establishing my name, and navigating the competitive beauty industry. There were moments of uncertainty, long hours, and times when I had to push through self-doubt.
Despite those struggles, each challenge helped shape me into the stylist and entrepreneur I am today. Over time, my hard work paid off, and I was able to build a successful business doing what I love. Now, after more than a decade in the beauty industry, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and remain committed to growing, evolving, and inspiring others along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in healthy hair care and protective styling, including knotless braids, silk presses, sew-ins, and extensions. My passion is helping clients achieve versatile, beautiful styles without compromising the health and integrity of their natural hair. I believe protective styles should not only look great but also promote long term hair growth and overall hair health.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Many of them have been with me for years because they know they’ll receive quality service, honest hair care advice, and styles that are customized to their individual needs and lifestyle.
What truly sets me apart is my versatility. As a licensed cosmetologist, I’m able to offer far more than braiding alone. Whether a client wants a flawless silk press, custom color, a sew-in, healthy hair treatments, or protective styles, they don’t have to visit multiple stylists I can provide a full service salon experience under one roof. Being a one stop shop allows me to care for my clients’ hair through every stage of their healthy hair journey, and I believe that’s one of the biggest reasons they continue to support my business year after year.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck I believe God has a divine plan for each of our lives. Looking back, I can see how He placed the right people in my path at the right time. Early in my career, I met incredible mentors and clients who opened doors for me and helped my business grow. I was also blessed to secure a great salon space during my first year as a stylist because the owner was from Mississippi as well. He gave me opportunities and support that I still appreciate to this day.
Of course, not every experience was positive. Early in my career, I developed the idea for what is now known as pre-stretched braiding hair, but larger companies eventually brought a similar concept to market before I was able to protect or fully develop mine. At the time, it felt like a major setback. Looking back, though, I see it as a valuable lesson about business, innovation, and protecting your ideas. Every challenge has helped prepare me for the next chapter, and I trust that everything has happened according to God’s plan.
