Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylynn Kirtley
Hi Jaylynn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My Journey into Fashion began in September 2019 I was accepted to “Wade College” finishing with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design & Product Development. In my first year as a student, I was eager to get involved in the city to begin working in fashion. Wade’s Career advisor posted a Volunteer opportunity with J3 Production for a new brand, Energy Check It was a pop-up event filled with amazing people and high energy. Little did I know then, but that same day was the start of an amazing mentorship and role as a J3 Productions Stylist. While still a student of Wade, I worked on countless Fashion Shows, networking events & other fashion-related events. Gaining skills & growing my network of Models, Makeup Artists, Hair, Photographers, other designers, and many like-minded creative individuals. Also while going through College, I worked in Alterations at different businesses such as Bridal, Leather handbags, Theater, and Freelance Alterations.
After graduation in September 2023, I produced my first runway show with the support of my fellow creatives Taft Columbus and Guilty Genius it was an enlightening experience booking everyone to be a part of the day. We overcame many challenges that came with show day.
I Would not have had such a successful show day without the support of my fashion mentor, Willie Johnson. I worked as a Leather Artisan at LVMH (Louis Vuitton) for a year before I decided to leave and begin my full-time freelance lifestyle, it’s been a journey to trust myself and know that my skills are great enough to support myself and all my bills. I’ve learned so much in this last year about how to handle business and how to communicate professionally. I’ve been blessed beyond measure in so many ways. I started to doubt myself at the end of 2024. After many prayers, I was presented with a new agency named “ONSET Management” with a role as an Assistant stylist and seamstress. I am beyond thrilled to see how 2025 unfolds & how I can bless others with my gifts from GOD.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth as no one road is smooth. I struggled with not having family in the city where I’m creating a career, I struggled with my finances with the ever-changing horrible economy, and I’ve been living alone for 3 years now, taking on every bill on my own. The one thing that seemed to come to me without struggle was Designing
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Fashion Designer, I want to be known for everyday wear and Performance wear. I am from Tomball, TX, a smaller country town near Houston. With this as a childhood, I want to specialize in Western looks, including Denim, Fringe, Leather, Fur, linen, & sustainable high-quality fabrics. I want my customers to shop with me all year round and be able to alter any garments they buy from me to ensure they feel confident wearing out my designs. Eventually, I want to offer more than clothing for men, women, and kids. I would like to sell products for the kitchen, living room, and laundry room, as well as craft and gift wrapping. I am most proud of myself for not giving up when I feel like I’m not good enough
What makes you happy?
