Today we’d like to introduce you to Juli Mae Munro.
Hi Juli Mae, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I purchased my first home, I was enthralled by the possibilities I had to build a garden. So much space, and I thought I could make it the most perfect Pinterest-worthy garden ever. That is when it hit me, I know absolutely nothing about gardening or plants. I think I had a Lily in my hand and thought, “I wonder if this does anything? I don’t like that I don’t know if this does anything.” So I almost immediately searched the internet for some sort of herbalist course or certification. I found a great program with Ecornell where I initially felt that I was way in over my head. I kept at it and studied hard. That was the point I realized that I loved herbalism and I was going to make wellness my life’s purpose. As I learned about the plants, I used the ones that stood out to me on my personal healing journey. This allowed me to embody the spirit of the plants. I have since gone to school for Ayurveda, where I learned philosophy and language to give to the essence of how I understand the plants. Through my education, I picked up foraging as a hobby. This quickly evolved into a business that I would take to the Farmer’s Markets. I began to make herbal oils, teas, and tinctures out of the herbs I would forage. My first and most beloved is my Wild Foraged Yarrow Oil infused into Organic Grapeseed oil. This is the perfect skincare oil for cuts, burns, scrapes, fine lines, wrinkles, everything! I started making it because I wanted that oil for my own skin, and it quickly evolved into my favorite thing to sell. I still make this oil 4 years later. Yarrow is my sign from the Earth that it is time to get out and forage for the season. Herbalism is just one arm of my wellness business. I also teach Baptiste-Style Power Flow Yoga, and that is why I say my life’s purpose is Wellness. Herbalism gave me my health back, and Yoga has helped me improve it. Yoga is a pillar in my business because I am so passionate about it. I initially struggled internally with small class sizes, but that was short lived because what small classes really taught me is incredible. I became hyper aware of what each student was doing, and what a body should look like in each posture. I was able to gain experience truly teaching yoga to the body in front of me, which is one of the foundations that I learned from my teacher Mel Taylor. I have since continued to hone in on my craft, while also hosting events like Goat Yoga, Women’s Retreats, private birthday parties, girl’s brunches, floating sound baths, and more. I love to curate an experience that leaves you relaxed and thriving in your body. I have always tried to embody an Ayurvedic way of life, and I feel like integrating my hobbies, passions, and business I really am grateful to be living my path.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any time there are life changes the business will struggle a bit. I moved to a new area in December, so there is always a little bit of becoming indigenous to place in order to understand the new(ish) flora and fauna. I learned what grew in different regions within about an hour of each other. I did struggle a bit finding what I was used to harvesting easily, but it allowed me to think outside of the box for foraging. This ultimately led to me expanding my foraging experience and a greater variety of herbs in my inventory.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create herbal oils, tinctures, baths, and teas. I wild forage in North Central Texas for medicinal herbs that I then infuse into different carriers to make medicines. I have many oils ranging from: face oils, hair oils, massage-pain relief oils, bug repellant, dermatitis emergency oil. These are all organic oils for topical use. I also have various seasonal tinctures that are infused into organic vodka: Wild Foraged-Echinacea, Wild Foraged-Mimosa Flower, Wild Foraged-Wormwood, Wild Foraged-Mugwort, Ayurvedic Blend Relaxation. I would hope I am known for my love to educate on herbalism. At the Farmer’s Markets I always like to take the time to teach about each herb, so stop by anytime for a mini lesson!
What does success mean to you?
Success is getting to do what I love every day, and to be a mom at the same time. I have created my life to feel fulfilled and balanced, so I really feel successful. I am grateful for my freedom and space to do what I love and raise my son the way that I want to. We are happy and healthy. I have access to clean water and fresh food (Shout out Let’s Grow Crazy and the Hood County Farmer’s Market!). That is success to me.
