Today we’d like to introduce you to Karajlon Dubose.
Hi Karajlon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was a littler girl, I remember watching my mom get ready for her day. She would fix her hair, put on makeup, and get dressed. My favorite part was watching her put on makeup. I loved the way she would react when she finished her lipstick. The pop of her lips as she snapped her fingers in confidence set off an alarm somewhere in me that I wanted every woman in the world to feel the way my mom would before she walked out the door to start her day. That is where my journey in the beauty industry began. As I got older, I would purchase lipsticks from stores but some of them would dry my lips out really bad or break me out. So, I researched how to make lip balm. I actually made it a science project in school once I projected it using nothing but all-natural products. Could you believe I won first place? My teacher pushed me and told me I needed to not give up on that. I never did. I worked so much on perfecting my brand and getting it in the right hands. Once I got the formula of my lipstick down pack, I promoted it until someone saw the passion in me that I saw in myself. Now today not only do I have a cosmetic line but that feeling I use to watch my mom get in confidence knowing she was ready to conquer the world is given to ever client that leaves my chair.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey was nowhere near smooth. I remember doing a photoshoot out of town and the next day I had a major shoot to do in a different state. I left my entire makeup kit in the hotel. I cried so hard from frustration that someone told me to just give up and go work for someone else so I wouldn’t have to worry about situations like that. It was in that moment I had to be my own motivation. I wiped those tears and used the last few dollars I had to make that shoot work. It was something about being told to give up on my dream that pushed me to do the impossible. And I did it! I’ve never depended on a 9 to 5 since then.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a beauty creative. I don’t just do makeup. I enhance the beauty that is already there by incorporating my own products. I’m known for my Beauty Box that I created during the pandemic. It was so hard for women to get their makeup, nails, and hair done so I created a salon in a box. Everything customized for each customer. In that box, you had a custom wig unit, custom acrylic press-on nails, mink lashes, and a neutral eyeshadow palette. It’s actually my top seller and caught the eyes of celebrities as well.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Characteristic that I feel is most important to my success would be my customer service skills, my determination, and not being afraid.
