Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Romes.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Marcus Romes. Owner and photographer of MarxRo Photography. I was born in Dallas, Texas. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. It was during my junior year that I first started using a camera and realized my passion for capturing moments and making people feel good. I am grateful to my former roommate, now a close friend, Darrion, who encouraged me to purchase the camera initially and was instrumental in securing my first photography gig. I found myself capturing images at fraternity and sorority events, the engineering department gatherings, and eventually, graduation and family/friend photos.
After graduating, I secured a job, but my passion for photography remained unwavering. I hold onto it tightly, especially when I realized that people were willing to pay well for my photography services. Recognizing the opportunity to turn my enjoyable hobby into a lucrative profession, I was motivated to pursue it further. During this period, I found myself photographing everyone, with my friends, transforming into professional models. Although various opportunities emerged, they didn’t quite match the grand vision I had for myself. Jumping ahead to 2022, I made the decision to elevate my business’s seriousness by establishing an LLC, moving into a loft, and creating a studio. Additionally, I introduced a 360-photo booth for events, expanding my offerings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Undoubtedly, the journey has been far from smooth. I’ve encountered instances where people cancelled photoshoots as I was in route, faced situations where payments were revoked, and navigated through instances of dissatisfaction with the photographs. It’s been a mix of challenges, to say the least. Absolutely, those learning experiences have been invaluable, as they’ve equipped me with a wealth of knowledge. I am grateful for them because they’ve not only enriched my own journey but also given me the ability to assist others as they navigate their own paths.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily focus on photographing people, although occasionally I do venture into capturing images of cars, buildings, and real estate. However, my specialty and reputation lie in photographing families, friends, and couples. That’s where my recognition and expertise truly shine. My greatest source of pride stems from the memories I’ve contributed to creating. It’s truly meaningful to me that I’ve had the privilege to capture moments for individuals who sadly passed away shortly after the photoshoot. This reinforces my pride in being able to assist people in preserving cherished moments and memories with the dear ones. What distinguishes me from others, I believe, is the experience I provide. I ensure that clients have a joyful and enjoyable time during their photoshoots, often resulting in shared laughter and a positive atmosphere. In fact, some of my dearest friends are those I’ve met through their photoshoot sessions. My aim is to create an environment where people feel completely at ease, enabling me to carry out my work seamlessly.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The aspect of Dallas that I appreciate the most is its diversity, both in terms of the surroundings and the people. It’s fascinating that you can travel just a short distance and experience a completely different environment, from cityscapes to rural areas with horses and cattle. On the flip side, what I find least appealing about the city is the intense heat, particularly during the summer months; the high temperatures can make outdoor photoshoots near impractical during that time.
