Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Washington.
Hi Mark, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out creating music independently with limited resources but a strong focus on storytelling, consistency, and building a real connection with listeners. Early on, I was recording, writing, and learning the business side of the industry at the same time—handling everything from content creation to promotion on my own. It’s still something that I do to keep everything home based, but I still love collaborating with others to build up others and increase exposure.
Over time, I refined my sound and began building momentum through live performances, collaborations, and consistent releases. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to share the stage with a range of established and emerging artists, including Amanda Perez (on two separate occasions), Frankie J, XB Valentine, Krystal Poppin, Jo Tyler, JoyBvnd, as well as OC Chris, Lil Flip, NB Ridaz, and KNG Ego. Those experiences helped me grow both creatively and professionally, and better understand how to connect with different audiences.
I’ve been featured on platforms including 97.9 The Beat, K104 FM, and Next Level Internet Radio, which helped expand my reach and introduce my music to wider audiences.
Today, I continue to develop my brand as King Papi Texas (KPT), focusing on high-quality releases, visual content, and expanding my audience through consistent engagement across platforms. My goal is to keep scaling my presence while staying authentic to my story and connecting with people through the music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like a lot of independent artists, I’ve had to build everything from the ground up without major backing, industry connections, or a large budget behind me. There were times I was balancing work, personal responsibilities, long studio nights, and performing while still trying to invest every dollar back into my music and brand.
One of the biggest challenges was getting people to take the vision seriously before there was proof of momentum. I’ve dealt with canceled opportunities, people underestimating me, fake industry promises, pay-to-play situations, and having to learn the business side of music the hard way through experience. There were moments where I was funding videos, marketing, travel, studio sessions, and performances completely out of pocket while still pushing to stay consistent online and in real life.
I’ve also had to overcome setbacks that tested my patience and discipline—technical issues during performances, losing important content and files, last-minute venue changes, and even periods where it felt like progress was moving slower than the work I was putting in. But every obstacle forced me to become more self-sufficient, more strategic, and more focused on longevity instead of quick success.
At the same time, those struggles helped shape who I am as an artist. They made me appreciate every opportunity more, whether it was getting featured on radio stations like 97.9 The Beat and K104 FM or sharing stages with established artists. Looking back, the difficult moments built the resilience and work ethic that continue to push my career forward today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a recording artist, performer, songwriter, and independent creative operating under the name King Papi Texas (KPT). My work goes beyond just making music — I focus on building full experiences through storytelling, visual content, live performances, branding, and audience engagement. I specialize in creating records that blend emotion, energy, and real-life experiences in a way that connects with a wide audience while still staying authentic to who I am.
What I’m most proud of is building my career independently and continuing to grow despite the obstacles that come with being an independent artist. Every performance, release, collaboration, and opportunity has been earned through persistence, self-investment, and staying dedicated to the craft. I’ve built relationships, expanded my audience organically, and created a brand that people genuinely recognize and support.
What sets me apart is my work ethic and my ability to connect with people authentically. A lot of artists focus only on music, but I focus on the entire experience — from the quality of the records and visuals to how supporters feel when they interact with my content or see me perform live. I’m hands-on with my creative direction, strategic with my releases, and committed to continuous growth. I don’t just want to make songs people hear once; I want to create moments and a legacy people remember.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I think the music industry is going to become even more creator-driven and digitally centered than it already is. Independent artists are gaining more power every year because platforms and technology have made it possible to build audiences without relying completely on major labels. Artists who understand branding, content strategy, fan engagement, and direct-to-consumer marketing are going to dominate the next era of the industry.
I also think we’re going to see a major shift toward artists becoming full-scale media brands instead of just musicians. Fans want more access, more personality, and more experiences beyond the music itself. Visual storytelling, live-streaming, short-form content, exclusive communities, AI-assisted production tools, and immersive fan experiences are all becoming essential parts of an artist’s career. The artists who can consistently create culture and community around their brand will have the biggest advantage.
Another big trend is the blending of genres and audiences. The barriers between hip-hop, pop, Latin, R&B, and melodic music continue to disappear, which opens the door for artists with versatile sounds to reach global audiences much faster than before. Regional artists are now able to gain international attention through one viral moment, one performance clip, or one strategic release.
I also believe live performances and authentic artist-to-fan connections will become even more valuable. With so much content online, people are craving real experiences and genuine energy. Artists who can truly perform, engage crowds, and build loyal fanbases offline will stand out in a saturated market.
At the same time, the industry is becoming more competitive than ever. Thousands of songs are uploaded daily, so talent alone isn’t enough anymore. Artists have to think like entrepreneurs, marketers, entertainers, and business owners all at once. The next generation of successful artists will be the ones who can balance creativity with strategy while staying authentic and adaptable as the industry evolves.
