Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sally Tam Nguyen.
Hi Sally, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Redefined Eyecare was born out of a vision to do things differently. My dream of opening my own optometry practice began over 15 years ago—a quiet, persistent vision of caring for others on my own terms, with warmth, excellence, and innovation. After graduating cum laude from both Texas A&M University and Illinois College of Optometry, I returned to my roots in the Dallas area with a desire to serve a community close to home.
After years in the industry, I recognized the opportunity to create an eye care experience that felt more personal and intentional. This journey could not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family. My father, Chan, served as the general contractor, working tirelessly to bring the practice I envisioned to life. My husband, Andrew, played a vital role in developing the business plan and managing back-end operations, including accounting and marketing. Our children, Savannah and Nicholas, are a constant source of inspiration, motivating me to provide the best care possible for our local community. With the love and support of extended family and friends, my dream became a reality.
Redefined Eyecare was built not just as a clinic, but as a reflection of that dream—a place where every patient feels truly seen, both in their eye health needs and as individuals. It’s where advanced technology meets genuine connection, and where every decision is guided by the belief that great care is patient-specific. Here, eye care is not a chore—it’s self-care. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Unfortunately, our initial plans were derailed by COVID, which delayed our location search and buildout, pushing back our opening. When we finally opened our doors in November 2023, we were soon faced with another challenge—learning that our building would be taken by the state under eminent domain as part of the US 380 expansion. In our very first year, we found ourselves balancing the work of growing a new practice while also confronting the possibility of being shut down. Through it all, we have remained committed to providing quality eye care to the McKinney area. Our plan is to continue serving patients at our current location until our new space—just across the intersection—is complete in early 2026, ensuring minimal disruption to the care our patients deserve.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We provide comprehensive eye evaluations customized to each patient’s unique visual needs. I have a special interest in contact lenses, myopia control, and dry eye management. I am a fully licensed Therapeutic Optometrist and Optometric Glaucoma Specialist, certified by the Texas Board of Optometry.
Our Sight Spa is the go-to destination for all things dry eye. We combine cutting-edge technology with research-driven techniques to create highly personalized treatment plans. Using diagnostic dyes, imaging, and thorough evaluations, we pinpoint the root causes of discomfort. Our treatment options range from manual gland expression and low-level light therapy to gentle lid microexfoliation and more. I’m thrilled to share that many patients who have suffered for years with chronic, debilitating symptoms have finally found lasting relief through our customized care plans.
Our practice also features a boutique optical with a curated selection of independent, high-quality eyewear. Whether you’re looking for prescription glasses, stylish sunglasses, or contact lenses, we provide expert guidance and precision fittings to ensure you see—and look—your best.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Our industry is at a unique crossroads. We’ve seen many longstanding private practices close or be absorbed by private equity, alongside a rise in “box store” chains and quick-stop clinics often staffed by remote providers. This shift worries me, because I believe optometry should be more than just fast service—it should be thoughtful, personalized care. We only get two eyes in a lifetime, and they give us the priceless gift of vision. Taking care of them is essential.
That’s why I’m committed to leveraging technology the right way: to enhance diagnostics, deepen patient education, and elevate the overall experience. It’s not about speeding through exams, but about delivering comprehensive, proactive care that prioritizes prevention and long-term eye health.
Looking ahead, I hope to help build a new standard for eye care. A legacy where my children, and future generations, can receive the same exceptional care we provide at Redefined Eyecare.
