We’re looking forward to introducing you to Chelsea Shaw. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Chelsea, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I’d have to say integrity. I think there are a lot of highly intelligent and high energy people that lack a moral compass. Your word has to mean something in and outside of whatever industry you choose.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chelsea. I’m from Dallas, Texas and hair has always been my passion. I’ve been licensed for roughly 11 years now and have worked a few different places sharpening my craft.
Though my focus is on healthy hair, I love that I’m able to provide a space for everyone that sits in my chair to feel seen and heard. The genuine bonds and conversations surpass anything I do behind the chair.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Somewhere along the line it became so much easier to hide than be seen. I can be very critical of myself and the things I put out, and one way I demonstrated that was I stopped posting as much for long periods of time. I would re-evaluate my work over and over and if one detail was out of place, it wasn’t worth putting out there.
On one hand it gave me the ability to constantly push myself, but being that hard on yourself can also become debilitating before you realize it’s happening. You may think you’re taking your time trying to produce your best work yet, but you end up holding yourself hostage to an impossible standard.
I think releasing yourself from that feeling and just allowing yourself to go with what makes sense in the moment is when you really create something great.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think a lot of people struggle with the concept of empathy if they haven’t experienced some level of hardship in their lifetime, but I think it’s one of the most important traits a person can have.
Being able to genuinely see and understand people allows you to relate to people from different walks of life and take away lessons from just about anyone and anything. To me that can feel like a superpower.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
There are so many people but Keith Lee is the first that came to mind. I’ve watched his reviews for so long and I’ve always admired how he’s kept God, his family, and his values first while prioritizing uplifting the community around him that needs it. As much as he’s grown and overcame not once has he seemed to lose sight of any of that.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they mention how funny I was!
But seriously, I hope there are at least a few stories of interactions I’ve had with people that have made them feel better, inspired them, or just brought a smile to their face at some small point.
More than anything if I was able to brighten someone’s day that’s more than enough for me to leave behind and be okay with.
