Today we’d like to introduce you to Lina Agbai.
Hi Lina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as an event planner began in 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria. Long before I knew event planning could become a career, I naturally gravitated toward organizing parties, coordinating details of the parties and bringing people together. I found joy in creating experiences that people would remember.
But I recognized early on that passion alone wasn’t enough. I wanted to develop my skills professionally, so I joined a wedding planning company as an intern and spent several months learning the craft from the ground up. That internship eventually grew into a paid role, giving me the opportunity to work alongside experienced planners on weddings, birthdays, and large-scale corporate events — some with over 1,000 guests. Those experiences taught me that exceptional events are built on thoughtful planning, strong teamwork, and genuine care for every client.
In 2018, I took a leap of faith and launched my first company, House of Diya Events. Within two years, I had planned and coordinated more than 15 events across Abuja. Each one strengthened my confidence and reaffirmed what I already felt deep down, that creating meaningful celebrations wasn’t just a job. It was my calling.
In 2019, I relocated to New York to pursue my master’s degree. Like most major life transitions, that move came with difficult choices. I paused my business to focus on my education and on building a career in HR. But even then, I never truly stepped away from event planning. I continued serving my church and local community, helping organize conventions, conferences, and community gatherings — because some passions simply don’t switch off.
Even as my career grew, I always felt there was a part of me waiting to be rediscovered. Event planning had never stopped calling to me. It had simply been waiting for the right season.
That realization inspired me to make another bold move. In 2025, I relocated to Dallas with a renewed sense of purpose and immediately began laying the foundation for a fresh chapter. This vision became Gold Script Events, officially launched in 2026.
Today, Gold Script Events represents everything I have carried throughout this journey — from my early days as an intern in Nigeria, to balancing graduate school with my career, to finding the courage to start again. Every event we design is rooted in excellence, intentionality, and the belief that life’s most meaningful moments deserve to be celebrated beautifully. My hope is that every client feels seen, cared for, and completely confident that they are in the right hands at GSE.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn‘t been a smooth road but God has been faithful through this journey.
One of the biggest challenges in my journey has been rebuilding my business after relocating to the United States. I had already established myself as an event planner in Nigeria, but I quickly realized that success doesn’t automatically transfer from one market to another. The event industry in the US is different — from diverse cultures, client expectations, vendor relationships to business operations and networking. If I wanted to build something sustainable, I knew I first had to become a student of the industry again.
When I made up my mind to relaunch my business, rather than rushing to launch, I chose to invest time in truly understanding the market, building meaningful relationships with trusted vendors, and learning what it actually means to serve clients here. That intentional approach has allowed me to create a business rooted not just in beautiful design, but in thoughtful planning, reliable partnerships, and a genuine understanding of what my clients need. When someone entrusts me with one of the most important days of their life, I want them to feel confident that they have the very best guidance and support every step of the way.
I also believe that learning is a lifelong commitment. No matter how much experience I carry, there is always something new to discover — whether it’s emerging industry trends, fresh design ideas, or better ways to serve the people who trust me with their vision. That mindset of continuous growth keeps me inspired, keeps me humble, and ultimately allows Gold Script Events to deliver experiences that are both elegant and deeply personal.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Gold Script Events is an event planning and coordination company dedicated to creating timeless, elegant, and intentional celebrations. We specialize in weddings, birthdays, showers, and milestone events, offering full service planning and coordination from start to finish so our clients can be fully present and enjoy every moment without the stress.
Any client can come to us with a vision, an idea, or even just a feeling, and we take it from there — translating it into an experience that is uniquely and beautifully theirs.
What sets us apart is our personalized approach. Every client is more than a project to us. We take the time to truly understand their vision and bring it to life through thoughtful planning, trusted vendor partnerships, and exceptional attention to detail.
What I am most proud of is the impact we have made so far. Everything I do at Gold Script Events is for my clients. So when an event comes to a close and a client pulls me aside with a heartfelt thank you or shares how much the experience meant to them — that is what fuels me. It affirms my purpose, strengthens my resilience, and reminds me exactly why I started.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking and mentorship are essential pillars for any business owner. There is a saying that the people you meet can make your business and I truly believe that. You have to be intentional about putting yourself out there, whether that means attending industry events, conferences, or professional gatherings in your field.
This has been one of the strategies that has worked well for me personally. When you show up in those spaces, you are not just meeting potential clients, you are also connecting with fellow business owners you can learn from, and discovering mentors who can help shape the direction of your journey.
My advice to every business owner is to start there. Be consistent, be open, and be genuinely curious about the people you meet. Mentorship rarely comes from a formal ask — it often grows naturally out of relationships built over time. So show up, stay connected, and never underestimate the power of the right room.
