Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Alejandra.
Hi Maria Alejandra , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Alejandra Hernandez, I am the Founder & Head Coach, Ionyx Academy
Some people discover tennis later in life. I didn’t.
I was three years old when my father, a tennis professional in Quito, Ecuador, put a racket in my hands.
For him, it wasn’t just about teaching me a sport. It was about teaching me how to think, how to handle pressure, and how to grow through discomfort. The court became the place where I learned who I was.
And I never really left it. I grew up competing across South America and eventually reached No. 1 in Ecuador in both singles
and doubles. When my family moved to the United States, everything shifted — new country, new system, new pressure. I adapted through tennis again. I played high school tennis in Texas, reached a
top-30 state ranking, and went on to earn a full scholarship to Newman University in Kansas.
I studied International Business and Communications, but even then I knew where I was always going to end up: back on the court.
After college, I coached at some of the top country clubs in Dallas, including Royal Oaks and various Tennis Centers. Over the years, I earned certifications through USPTA, PTR, and ITF, and spent more
than 15 years coaching players of all ages and levels while carrying over 30 years of playing experience behind everything I teach.
Then 2020 changed everything.
When my corporate role ended during the pandemic, I didn’t really see it as a pivot. I felt more like clarity. I went back to what I had always known and cared about most and I founded Ionyx Academy (formerly A1 Tennis)
Not because I had a plan. Because I had a conviction and a vision.
The meaning of Ionyx
Ionyx represents for me strength in motion.
It’s not just a name — it’s an idea. Energy, transformation, and structure all at once. A belief that tennis
is not the end goal. It’s the tool. The space where people are shaped into something stronger than they
were before they stepped on court.
I built Ionyx after seeing the same pattern over and over in youth tennis: a focus on rankings, trophies,
and results, but not enough attention on the person behind the athlete.
So I decided to build something different.
At Ionyx, we train tennis seriously — but we also train the human being. Confidence, discipline,
emotional control, leadership, resilience, presence. The ability to fail, reset, and keep going. Not just in
matches, but in life.
I let my students show up fully as themselves. I don’t try to strip away personality — I build from it.
Every player is different, so every development path has to be different too.
I also built a female-led coaching environment in a sport traditionally dominated by men. Not as a
statement, but as a standard. Because leadership in coaching is about trust and impact.
From beginners to long-term competitive players, my students stay because something meaningful is
happening in the process.
And that’s what Ionyx is.
A place where athletes and people evolve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road.
Building a career in tennis as both a player and a coach comes with constant challenges — from limited resources early on, to having to prove yourself in environments where credibility is earned over time, not given. One of the biggest struggles was learning how to transition from just coaching tennis to truly developing complete athletes and people. And also creating a long lasting system that is different was all about failing and learning in the business aspect That shift required rethinking everything I knew about training, communication, and long-term development. I didn’t have much guidance on a real business aspect.
There were also moments of doubt, especially when trying to build a structured system that produces fast, visible results without sacrificing quality. Creating that balance between performance and personal development took time, trial, and a lot of refinement in the field.
But those challenges are exactly what shaped my approach today. They forced me to become more intentional, more structured, and more committed to building players who don’t just improve technically, but grow as disciplined, confident human beings through the sport.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ionyx Tennis Academy?
Ionyx Academy is a high-performance tennis development academy built on one core philosophy: tennis is a vehicle to develop strong, disciplined, and confident human beings.
We specialize in structured player development that accelerates both technical and mental growth. Our training system is intentional and detail-driven, designed to produce measurable improvement while building long-term competitive identity.
What sets us apart is our ability to deliver fast, well-structured results without losing focus on character development. We don’t just train athletes to perform — we teach them how to think, compete, and carry themselves under pressure.
Beyond performance, we are most proud of the transformation our players experience. They leave not only as better tennis players, but as more resilient, focused, and self-aware individuals.
At Ionyx Academy, we are redefining tennis development by combining high-performance coaching with a deep commitment to personal growth.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is training early in the morning on the tennis court with my father. It wasn’t about competition yet it was about consistency, structure, and presence. Those moments quietly shaped how I understand development today, both in sport and in life
