Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayela Munoz
Hi Mayela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started in the insurance industry my senior year of high school. I never thought that job I took would one day take me to owning my own insurance agency years later. I was there for 6 years, I got pregnant with my first child and decided to take a break from work, I was a stay-at-home mom for about 2 years. I recall telling my husband that I would like to one day own my insurance agency but never in a near future. I knew the insurance side of the business but definitely not the business side of it, so the thought was scary. In 2019 my husband and his brother decided to open their barbershop and coincidentally there happened to be an office space for lease next to their shop that they had just leased. My husband immediately came to me and told me this was my shot to start my own agency. I remember at that time I was 8 months pregnant, the thought of having a toddler and a newborn and starting two businesses was insane to me but I took the leap of faith. I decided to go for it with his support of course, knowing me I would have never done it if he hadn’t pushed me and supported me. I signed my lease in January of 2019, opened our doors in April of 2019. The process was so new to me, I definitely can say it was an experience as a first-time business owner. Building the agency was not without its challenges. So many learning curves, occasional setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. Yet, each small victory, each satisfied client, and each positive review kept me going in this journey. I hired my first official employee my second year in business and as of today, we are now a team of 4 and just opened our second office in Fort Worth. Success in the insurance industry, like in any great endeavor, is a team effort. Together, we build trust, deliver excellence, and protect what matters most.
Starting that first business was the foundation for launching new ventures and investing in commercial property, creating a cycle of growth and opportunity for me and my family. My insurance and tax agency gave me the opportunity to invest in a commercial building this year in May. This building houses our second location and we also have offices to be rented out to other businesses. I’m excited to start growing our new office and provide others with space and knowledge to start their own business.
I live by the quote by Mark Twain – “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
This quote emphasizes the importance of taking that first step toward your business goals. It’s a reminder that progress begins with the decision to start and the courage to move forward.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Starting a business with 2 under 2 was definitely not easy. My first year I was literally raising 2 kids while trying to also grow a business. That was a challenge, but I still kept on going and made it work. I would take my 2 kids to the office while I was working. I created a small play/sleep area in the back part of the office. My babies were amazing, the baby was a sleepy head, he would just sleep and eat. My 2 year old was super helpful, she was like my little employee.
A year later in 2020 COVID hit. Starting a business during COVID-19 was certainly a challenging situation for us. The pandemic forced us to close our doors to the public. I got pregnant with my 3rd child and I ended up closing my office and working from home, there was a lot of uncertainty and required quick adaptation to new realities. Business was not the greatest and I could have given up right there but I kept on going. In 2021 we reopened at a brand-new office and the growth from there on has been amazing.
I have this thought in my head that if our business survived and made it through COVID we can survive any challenge that comes at us.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What makes you happy?
I find happiness in a few key things: God, my family, helping others, and learning and growing. I’m all about connecting with people and helping them find what they’re looking for, whether it’s information, advice, or just a good conversation. I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to assist and see how I can make a positive impact. It’s like solving little puzzles or answering questions is my way of making things a bit better for someone.
Happiness comes from the choices we make and the actions we take. I like to remind myself to find joy in the everyday moments and appreciate the journey.
