Community Highlights: Meet Melanie of Mel Chaponan Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie.

Hi Melanie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography has been a passion of mine since high school. I was always drawn to it, especially since many of my friends were part of the photography magnet program, and I loved watching them create and tell stories through their images. Everything really began when my mom gifted me my first camera as a graduation present. What started as a hobby quickly grew into something much bigger.

In 2021, I decided to officially launch my photography business and turn that passion into a career. Since then, I’ve photographed more than 30 weddings, numerous quinceañeras, portraits and special events. I love capturing meaningful moments and creating images that people can look back on for years to come.

Like any small business journey, there have been challenges along the way, but consistency, discipline and a genuine love for what I do have kept me moving forward. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for how far this journey has taken me and I’m even more excited about what’s still ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has definitely not been a smooth road and I don’t think entrepreneurship ever truly is. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to wear so many hats at once. As a small business owner, I’m not just the photographer. I’m also the marketer, scheduler, accountant, customer service representative and editor behind the scenes.

On top of running my business, I’ve balanced multiple jobs, school, and family responsibilities throughout different seasons of my life. There have been moments when I felt stretched thin, but those experiences taught me the importance of discipline, time management and perseverance.

Despite the challenges, every obstacle has been worth it. Getting the opportunity to do something I genuinely love and capture some of the most important moments in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding. I’m grateful for every client who trusts me with their memories and that gratitude is what continues to motivate me every day.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Melanie, or “Mel” for short, and I am a portrait and event photographer. I specialize in capturing a wide range of moments including birthdays, graduations, engagements, maternity, families and even fur babies. I also cover special events such as holiday parties, birthday celebrations, quinceañeras and weddings.

What I love most about photography is that it allows me to blend storytelling with real connection. I want my sessions to feel comfortable, fun and true to the people in front of my camera. You will usually find me playing music during shoots to help set the mood and I bring a lot of energy into my work so clients feel at ease and can genuinely enjoy the experience.

Beyond photography, I’m someone who loves music, dancing and bringing lighthearted energy into every space I’m in. That naturally carries into my sessions and helps me capture more authentic, natural moments.

I’m incredibly proud of how far my small business has come. Building it has required persistence, discipline and belief in myself through both growth and challenges. What sets my brand apart is not just the images I deliver, but the experience behind them: comfortable, fun and personal.

My biggest pride is seeing something I created continue to grow and serve people in meaningful moments of their lives. I hope my work encourages others to pursue what they’re passionate about, even when the journey feels uncertain, because building something you love is always worth it.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is simply being around my family during small, everyday moments that felt bigger to me than they probably were. I remember always being the one observing everything, noticing details and wanting to hold onto moments in some way even before I had a camera in my hands.

A really special memory for me is receiving my first camera as a graduation gift from my mom. Even though that came later in my teenage years, it connects back to how I was as a child. Always curious, always watching and always drawn to capturing life in some form. I didn’t realize it then, but those early moments of paying attention to people and memories were the foundation of what I do now.

Looking back, I think my childhood was filled with quiet inspiration that shaped how I see the world today.
