Hi Oscar , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Oscar Sanchez, and my journey into barbering started because of my mom. She encouraged me to enroll in barber school when I was younger, and from there everything began. At the time, I could only attend classes on weekends because my dad was the one taking me to school. Around the same time, my dad also decided to attend barber school, so we were both learning and growing together.
After completing the required hours and getting licensed, we started working to gain experience in the industry. We first worked in a beauty salon and later moved into a barbershop environment, where we learned not only the technical side of barbering, but also the importance of professionalism, customer service, and building relationships with clients.
Once we gained enough experience, my mom encouraged us to open our own barbershop. In the beginning, it was just my dad and me working together, but over time more barbers joined our team and the business continued to grow. About a year or two later, we had the opportunity to expand into the space next door. By that time, we had around 15 barbers, and we realized we had built something special.
After several years in the business, our family decided to take the next step and open a barber academy. We wanted to create a place where we could teach not only haircutting skills, but also share the real-world experience and knowledge we gained throughout our journey. That vision became The Premium Barber Academy.
Our goal is to build a strong school that prepares students for success in the real world. We want our students to leave fully prepared to work professionally, grow their confidence, and eventually build businesses of their own if they choose to.
Giving back to the community is also a big part of who we are. During colder seasons, we partner with local organizations and churches that provide food and clothing for homeless individuals, and we volunteer by giving free haircuts. We also collaborate with other barbershops to organize free haircut events for the community. Before the school year starts, we sometimes provide free school supplies and free haircuts for children to help families in the area.
Even though our academy officially opened in November, we’ve been growing very quickly, and we are currently working on moving into a larger location to continue expanding and serving more students and families in our community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many family businesses, we faced a lot of challenges along the way. In the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was balancing time, work, and family responsibilities while trying to grow in the barber industry. Since we were learning everything from the ground up, we had to gain experience little by little and prove ourselves through hard work and consistency.
Opening our own barbershop was also a challenge because we were taking a big risk financially and professionally. There were moments where we had to work long hours, make sacrifices, and learn how to manage a growing team and business. As the shop expanded, new responsibilities came with it, including leadership, organization, customer service, and maintaining high standards every day.
Opening the academy brought a completely different set of challenges. Starting a school requires a lot of responsibility, patience, and commitment. We’ve had to learn the educational and business side of the industry while continuing to grow the barbershop at the same time. Since the academy is still new, we are constantly improving, learning, and adapting as we grow.
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that success does not happen overnight. It takes consistency, discipline, teamwork, and faith in the process. Every challenge has helped us grow stronger and has motivated us to continue building something positive for our students and community.
We’ve been impressed with The Premium Barber Academy & The Premium Barber Shop, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Premium Barber Academy is a family-owned barber school focused on preparing students for real success in the barber industry. Our goal is not only to teach haircutting techniques, but also to help students develop professionalism, confidence, discipline, customer service skills, and the mindset needed to build a successful career or business.
What makes us different is that everything we teach comes from real experience in the industry. Before opening the academy, we spent years building and growing our own barbershop business. Because of that, we understand both the creative and business side of barbering, and we try to pass that knowledge on to our students every day.
We specialize in hands-on training and helping students feel prepared for the real world after graduation. We focus on building a positive environment where students can grow their skills, gain confidence, and learn what it takes to become successful professionals.
One thing we are especially proud of is the connection we have with our community. We regularly participate in community events, free haircut programs, school supply giveaways, and collaborations with local organizations and churches to help families and individuals in need.
Even though The Premium Barber Academy officially opened in November, we have grown very quickly and are already working toward expanding into a larger location. We are proud of the growth we’ve achieved in such a short amount of time, and we are excited about the future of our academy and the opportunities we can create for our students and community.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was watching my mom work in the beauty industry as an esthetician. Growing up, I saw how passionate she was about her work and how she was always learning new things, taking classes, improving her skills, and pushing herself to grow professionally.
Seeing her dedication motivated me at a young age. It showed me the importance of hard work, consistency, and always continuing to learn no matter how much experience you have. I think watching both my parents work hard to build something for our family inspired me to want more for myself and continue growing as a person and professional.
Looking back now, those moments played a big role in shaping the mindset and motivation I have today.
