Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannen An.
Hi Shannen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a fashion designer. I’ve always been fascinated by the way a space can make people feel. Over time, that interest evolved into a career in interior design. I began working on both residential and commercial projects, and that journey eventually led me to create Alfresco Cottage.
I’ve always loved traveling and staying in beautifully designed spaces. But no matter how wonderful a hotel was, there was always a point near the end of a trip when I found myself wanting to go home. That feeling inspired me to create a true home away from home. A space that feels special enough for a getaway while still offering the comfort and familiarity of home.
That idea became Alfresco Cottage. When we purchased the property in Frisco, it needed significant renovation. I immediately saw its potential and personally led the transformation of the home. What started as a renovation project quickly became a passion project.
Over time, the project became about more than just creating a beautiful space. My husband is an optometrist and we had always wanted to build something meaningful together. Through Alfresco Cottage, every booking helps provide a pair of eyeglasses to a child in need through VisionSpring’s See to Learn program in Asia.
Today, Alfresco Cottage allows me to combine my love of design, travel and creating spaces that make people feel at home while making a positive impact through every stay.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges was balancing everything at once. I was renovating a property, raising twin boys, and building a business at the same time. There were plenty of moments when it felt overwhelming.
The renovation itself came with its own challenges. Like many renovation projects, there were unexpected costs, delays, and design decisions that took much longer than anticipated. Since I had a very specific vision for the space, I was involved in every detail, which was both rewarding and exhausting.
Even after opening Alfresco Cottage, the learning never stopped. Creating a beautiful space is one thing, but running a hospitality business is another. We genuinely try to make every guest feel cared for which often means being available to solve unexpected problems and help however we can. Every guest, booking, and challenge teaches me something new.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. The challenges pushed me to grow and made Alfresco Cottage even more meaningful because so much heart and hard work went into creating it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Alfresco Cottage is a design-driven boutique stay in Frisco built around the idea of a true home away from home. As an interior designer, I personally led the renovation and design of the property with the goal of creating a space that feels both beautiful and welcoming.
What we’re most known for is our attention to detail and the experience we create for our guests. Every design choice was intentional. From the layout and furnishings to the outdoor spaces, we wanted guests to feel like they were staying in a thoughtfully designed home rather than a typical vacation rental.
What sets us apart is the combination of design, hospitality and purpose. We believe great spaces bring people together and create meaningful memories. We also wanted the business to have a positive impact beyond hospitality. Through our partnership with VisionSpring’s See to Learn program, every booking helps provide a pair of eyeglasses to a child in need in Asia.
What I’m most proud of is that Alfresco Cottage has become more than just a place to stay. It reflects my passion for design, our family’s values and our commitment to creating memorable experiences while giving back through every stay.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
One piece of advice I would give is to start before you feel completely ready. Looking back, there were many things I didn’t know when I started, and I learned most of them by doing.
I also wish I had worried less about making everything perfect. As a designer, it’s easy to get caught up in every detail. While details matter, progress matters more. Some of the best ideas evolve over time.
Most importantly, trust your vision. There will always be people who question your ideas or tell you something won’t work. If you have a clear sense of what you’re trying to create and you’re willing to put in the work, stay committed to it.
Building Alfresco Cottage taught me that meaningful projects don’t happen overnight. They take patience, persistence, and a willingness to keep going even when things don’t go according to plan.
