Community Highlights: Meet Sheena Coulberson of ManeTamed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Coulberson.

Hi Sheena, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Sheena Coulberson. I was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, and moved to Grand Prairie. Texas in 2015 because I needed a change of scenery. I took interest in the hair at a very young age. I would sit in my grandmother’s beauty shop every Saturday watching her do her hair all day. I would wait for her to walk a client outside so that I could sneak and use her Marcel irons. Lol. I was fascinated by them. By the time I was in middle school I was doing finger waves and roller sets on my mom’s hair. I always had the ability to just look at a style and execute it. Back then, there wasn’t any YouTube or social media, or how-to videos. You either had it, or you didn’t.

In high school, other girls would ask me to do their hair, but I guess back then, I didn’t realize how much I was into the hair. While attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe after high school, I was working at Walmart and doing hair as a side job for extra money. After having my daughter, I dropped out of college and decided to attend beauty school. Torn between finances and career, I took a job for Chase Home Finance and quit beauty school. After a few years of working there and being laid off, I went back and finished my cosmetology hours. I’d never stopped doing hair during the years of working for companies. Getting my license and going into a shop was freedom for me. It gave me the courage to push forward despite the many things I was dealing with in my personal life. Moving to Texas was one of the best decisions that I could’ve made. In 2016, I got my cosmetology Instructor license while working in a Grand Prairie salon. I launched my ManeTamed Edges edge control in 2018 and have since launched Squeaky Strands Shampoo, Soft Strand’s conditioner, Follicle stimulating growth oil, and more products to come.

I am the owner of ManeTamed Salon, where my specialty is healthy hair. I offer services for short hair, color, natural hair, locks, clients suffering from alopecia, crotchet, ponytails, extensions including sewing, Quick weaves, tips, clip-ins, and custom machine wefted wigs. ManeTamed Salon focuses on quality over quantity so your appointment is in a private setting where you can feel completely comfortable and relaxed enough to let your hair down literally. Lol

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Relocating and having to rebuild my clientele from scratch had me second-guessing my decision. Also having all these great ideas and not necessarily having the financial cushion to move forward has been my biggest challenge. I tell people all the time; Entrepreneurship is hard, but with hard work and consistency you’ll definitely get where you’re going. Just stay focused!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about ManeTamed LLC?
ManeTamed LLC was established in 2011. I came up with the name because I knew back then that I eventually would add products and many other things pertaining to my business, plus it just sounded professional. People would always say that I tamed their hair, so I ran with it. I came up with 6 names with “tamed” in them and had all of my family and friends vote, and everyone loved ManeTamed. I am known for being a Jill of all trades when it comes to hair. I can do it All. I don’t offer braids as a service but I can braid as well. What sets me apart is I’m a one-stop shop for hair and makeup. My clients love the fact that I don’t just cater to one hair service and that I educate them on maintaining healthy hair and scalp. I am very passionate about hair care overall.

ManeTamed offers salon services, products, hair education classes, makeup classes, and more. My products are available for purchase on my website www.sheenathemanetamer.com and can be shipped or picked up at the salon. You can also book appointments, search for upcoming events, and keep up with All things ManeTamed by subscribing to the website.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons has been to always have a plan no matter what and save, save, save!!!
