Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Canerday.
Hi Dani, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path into this industry wasn’t planned. In fact, I spent years believing it was only temporary.
My teenage years were extremely difficult, and at 16 I made the decision to leave high school. I earned my GED because I knew I wanted more for my life. More than anything, I knew I needed to leave my hometown and start over if I wanted to build a different life.
I enrolled in cosmetology school because I thought it would simply be a way to pay my way through college. Hair was never supposed to be my career.
Looking back, it’s funny how life unfolds. I spent years asking the universe to show me a different path, only to realize it had been leading me exactly where I was supposed to be all along.
The truth is, I was never naturally confident behind the chair, and I questioned myself constantly. From the very beginning, I invested every extra dollar I could into education because I was always trying to become “good enough.” Looking back, I realize I wasn’t just trying to become a better hairstylist. I was trying to become enough in my own eyes.
I remember one conversation with myself so clearly. I thought, “I know this isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing. Please show me another option.”
Then, almost as quietly as the thought had come, another one followed.
“What if I ask you to stay?”
At the time, I didn’t understand it. I couldn’t have imagined that years later I would open my own micro salon, or that the career I questioned so often would become one of the greatest privileges of my life.
As I’ve matured as a woman, I’ve realized this work was never solely about hair.
Hair is simply the medium that brings my guests and me together, but what happens within the energy of the space is what I’ll never take for granted.
Over the years, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside women through some of the most important chapters of their lives. I’ve celebrated engagements, babies, promotions, fresh starts, and joy. I’ve also held space through heartbreak, loss, divorce, illness, and seasons that felt impossible to carry alone. Some days are filled with laughter, other days, we’re simply making it through together.
I realized that the best gift I can give someone in my chair is allowing them to feel safe, heard, and accepted exactly as they are.
If I’ve created a space where someone can exhale for a few hours, where they feel cared for, beautiful, and a little more like themselves when they leave than when they walked in, then I’ve done far more than I ever thought this career would allow me to do.
What I didn’t realize all those years ago was that this career was never solely about hair. My calling was, and always will be, people.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
When I moved from Arkansas to Texas, I was essentially starting over. I worked long hours and said yes to just about every service because I was determined to build a career that would eventually give me more freedom. Looking back, though, I don’t think the biggest challenge was building a clientele. It was building confidence in myself.
One of the hardest decisions I ever made was leaving the security of a salon and opening my own micro salon alone. I knew the environment I wanted to create, but betting on myself felt terrifying.
Thankfully, my husband never saw me the way I saw myself. Long before I believed I was capable, he believed in me. He encouraged me from day one and continues to do so on the hardest of days. He has always been my biggest cheerleader, reminding me of my strengths when I couldn’t see them for myself and gently pushing me to take chances I never would have taken alone.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in custom hair extensions, lived in color, and creating hair that feels effortless and natural.
More than anything, I’m proud of my commitment to continuing education. I’ve never been someone who’s satisfied with “good enough.” I’m always looking for ways to grow, refine my craft, and give my guests the best experience possible.
If you asked my guests what I’m known for, I hope they’d tell you I’m honest and that my heart is always in the right place. I genuinely care about the people who sit in my chair. I want them to leave loving their hair, but even more than that, I want them to feel seen, cared for, and a little lighter than when they walked in.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Most of my favorite childhood memories involve my parents. I loved picking blackberries, cooking, hiking, doing arts and crafts with my mom, and just being weird together.
I also looked forward to my dad taking me on daddy-daughter dates and reading stories before bed.
As I got older, working out together became a way for my dad and me to work through hardship side by side. Those are the memories that still make me smile whenever I think about them.
